“Sherlock Jr.” is the finest argument to Keaton’s masterpiece “The General.” Like Chaplin’s “Modern Times” over “City Lights,” it is a tour-de-force of skills, acrobatics and invention. It's like Houdini doing slapstick comedy, Keaton escapes from everything that’s thrown his way with grace and accuracy. In the scene where Keaton stepped inside the movie screen showed his cre... read more

While not my favourite of Keaton's excursions, there's an undeniable charm to it. Never mind the reference to Sherlock, though; I think, after having seen this, that Buster Keaton should be more widely credited as the first Bond!

Sherlock Jr is the perfect showcase for the genius that is Buster Keaton, upon viewing all his silent features, not only can I rank this as my favourite film of his, but also my favourite silent movie of all time, I doubt I will ever see another silent movie as fun, thrilling or mind blowing as this.

My Top 90 Favorite Comedy Movies (90 movies items)

"During these early days of film, it's not all that hard to figure out who were the ruling kings of the cinema back then. When it comes to the 20's, Buster Keaton is without a doubt one the first names to come up. After viewing the combination of fantasy dream sequences with the elaborate stunts of physical comedy in Sherlock, Jr., is becomes clear why these theatric traits will always be cemented as the stylistic signature of Buster Keaton. It's also easy to see why this film is regarded by man"

Sherlock Jr.

“Keaton’s learning curve was immensely quick. Only a year after Our Hospitality showed his artistic triumphs in the infant stages, Sherlock Jr. comes out and demonstrates that he is now at the top of his craft. At roughly forty-five minutes in length, which is both too brief and just right, Sherlock Jr. may just, objectively speaking, be the greatest film in all of his filmography.

It’s certainly the most avant-garde. While many of his films may dip their toes into surrealistic images or make you think you’re hallucinating what you’re seeing, this one actually is a surrealistic, hallucinatory journey through the imagination. It’s also a love letter to cinema in many ways.

Keaton is a love-sick film projectionist who daydreams of becoming a world class detective” read more

Sherlock Jr. centers around a film projectionist/wannabe detective (Keaton), whom when falling asleep on the job, dreams about going inside a movie screen and living out his fantasy of being a detective.

The term 'ahead of it's time' may get thrown around a lot, but I believe Sherlock Jr. is truly deserving of this title. The aforementioned sequence of Keaton's character entering a movie screen features some groundbreaking special effects which did have me questioning how t” read more
