A landmark western

"A gun is a tool, Marian; no better or no worse than any other tool: an axe, a shovel or anything. A gun is as good or as bad as the man using it. Remember that."

Shane may be a vehement western due to its adherence to a number of the genre's tropes, but it's a film which belies its genre. By the 1950s, the American western genre had become predictable, with westerns growing to the ... read more

A classic

Honestly, beforehand, I didn't really know what to expect but since it is a classic, I thought I should give it a try. Basically, it is a rather standard Western story about some simple farmers who are bullied by some evil cattle baron and, of course, a mysterious stranger passes by and saves the day. It doesn't sound really original and it is completely predictable but we shouldn't forget that th... read more

Review by Dominic

As young Joey Starrett (Brandon DeWilde) plays around the front of his isolated valley home, stalking a deer with an unloaded rifle, a buckskin-clad stranger (Ladd) rides in from the distance and crosses on to his family’s land. The boy is captivated by the man, w... read more

Greatest Film Tearjerking Moments Q - Z (51 movies items)

"The poignant final goodbye scene in which young, anguished, and heartbroken Joey Starrett (Brandon De Wilde), with tears streaking down his face, sadly cried out after his hero/idol Shane (Alan Ladd): ("Pa's got things for you to do, and Mother wants you. (the words "wants you" echo) I know she does. Shane. Shane! Come back! 'Bye, Shane"), as the wounded gunfighter rode away on his horse toward the mountains, slumped in the saddle, in one of filmdom's most famous and haunting endings."
