"Other than my eye, two things aren't paralysed. My imagination...and my memory. They're the only two ways I can escape from my diving bell." - Jean-Dominique Bauby

Le Scaphandre et le papillon (in English, the title translates to The Diving Bell and the Butterfly) is a masterful, ethereal, beautiful cinematic composition based on the unbearably poignant memoirs of French magazine e... read more

''I decided to stop pitying myself. Other than my eye, two things aren't paralyzed, my imagination and my memory.''

The true story of Elle editor Jean-Dominique Bauby who suffers a stroke and has to live with an almost totally paralyzed body; only his left eye isn't paralyzed.

I'm usually not so found of those "true story" movies but this one is amazing. The best thing, in my opinion, was the directing, Schnabel succeeded to give an idea of what it would be like to be in this predicament. Of course, Mathieu Amalric gives a powerhouse perfomance and the story is just fascinating. A great achievement.

Description: Elle France editor Jean-Dominique Bauby, who, in 1995 at the age of 43, suffered a stroke that paralyzed his entire body, except his left eye. Using that eye to blink out his memoir, Bauby eloquently described the aspects of his interior world, from the psychological torment of being trapped inside his body to his imagined stories fro ... The Best French Movies (28 movies items)

"The film is based on a real man, and the book he astonishingly succeeded in writing although he could blink only his left eye. The man was Jean-Dominique Bauby (Mathieu Amalric), who was the editor of Elle, the French fashion magazine, when he had his paralyzing stroke. "

Five by Five Project for 2013 (25 movies items)

"Watched March This film starts off with a brilliant visual style that puts you squarely in the main character/narrator's head, and then injects enough humor and tragedy along the way to keep you engaged & entertained throughout. The cast is flawless, the story is beautiful & poetic...really I can't find a single thing here to complain about. The only thing missing that holds me back from giving it a 10/10 is that magic feeling that tens tend to give me. But that could have been due to my daught"

"Onnettomuus jonka seurauksena halvaantuminen. Kuolleessa kropassa ainoastaan toimivia aisteja. Muumiona elelyä, hengittämistä. Antaa aikaa muodostaa tilanteesta vision omalle kohdalleen josta seurauksena voimakasta ahdistusta, pahaa oloa sekä itsetuhoisia mietteitä. Pysäyttävää, kaikessa lohduttomuudessaan kuitenkin toivoa antavaa, kaunista ja liikuttavaa."

Filmsite Greatest Tearjerkers Scenes/Movie Moments (318 movies items)

"In this awe-inspiring, yet tearjerking sad film about Elle French magazine editor Jean-Dominique Bauby (Mathieu Amalric) who suffered a debilitating stroke at the age of 43 that left him with "locked-in" syndrome, he first saw himself in a mirror, thought to himself: "God, who's that? Me?" and then commented internally about his shock: "I look like I came out of a vat of formaldehyde. How awful!"; as he recovered but remained restricted, immobile and frustrated (comparing his mind to a diver in "
