In the 70's New York Tony Manero is a young man of Italian descent who lives in Brooklyn.
Tony is an extrovert but impulsive and shallow, he works in a paint shop and attends a group of compatriots. Manero lives at home with his parents, a 7 months unemployed dad, a very religious mom, granny and a minor sister, his major brother, Frank jr, is a priest in crises for a lack of vocation. Of course, I had already seen this movie but since it was a while back, I thought I should give it another try. In fact, it was my wife who actually introduced it to me when we first met. Indeed, it was one of her favorite movies, one of those that she saw so many times as a child, and she was (rightfully) shocked that I never saw the damned thing in my life. Well, even though it was indeed a dece... read more

Tony is an uneducated Brooklyn teenager. The highlight of his week is going to the local disco, where he is the king of the dancefloor. Tony meets Stephanie at the disco and they agree to dance together in a competition. Stephanie resists Tony's attempts to romance her, as she aspires to greater things; she is moving across the river to Manhattan. Gradually, Tony also becomes disillusioned with the life he is leading and he and Stephanie decide to help one another to start afresh.

" Notes: Well, even though it was indeed a decent watch, to be honest, I didn't really connect with this movie, I'm afraid. Basically, the oddest thing about this movie is how it keeps switching between the rather cheesy dance scenes (which were pretty cool, I have to admit it, at least, if you like this kind of dance) and some realistic dark moments which were more compelling to watch, at least, for me. It seems that the makers were not able to make up their minds between something rat"

" Connie: So, are you as good in bed as you are on that dance floor? Tony: You know, Connie, if you're as good in bed as you are on the dance floor, then you're one lousy fuck. Connie: Then how come they always send me flowers the next morning? Tony: I dunno. Maybe they thought you was dead. "

Interesting film facts (453 movies items)

"The lighted wall and lighted floor at Odyssey 2001 were not actually at the disco, but added in for the film. The "blinking light" effect on the wall was created by covering the wall in tin foil and reflecting blinking Christmas tree lights off of it. The film opened in the United States on December 14, 1977 at the height of the disco era. Less than two years later, the disco era ended. According to John Travolta, The Bee Gees weren't involved with the film at the very beginning. "I was dancin"
