Personally I find Guy Maddin's films (well, the two I've seen anyway) to be very visually interesting. The way he's able to make a film truly look as though it just came out of some vault after being lost since 1930 or so is fascinating to me. (Though I eventually did begin to wonder just how many jars of Vaseline he used on those lenses.) I very glad that I watched "My Winnipeg" (2007) before I watched this film as it works well as a prologue to this film. So, if you have seen "My Winnipeg" this film is done in very much the same surrealist grainy film footage style. However, this film has a linear, if somewhat strange, storyline.
While I liked the idea of a full feature semi-surrealist work, so far I still prefer Guy Maddin's shorter features."
