book vs. movie

the film is a far cry from the genius of the book. The Gags don't work the characters are shallow and in the end the book is far more enjoyable.

Umm...

Well, basically...it just didn't work for me. I usually like zany strange offbeat movies (Eternal Sunshine, Garden State, Lost in Translation), but this one just went a bit overboard. There were definitely some cool moments in it, but I thought overall it just, wasn't really a story I could get in to. I couldn't relate to any of the characters really at all, and I couldn't really justify any of their actions. I thought the people who make the movie were working too hard to make the movie nuts. Most strange movies have at least shades, or scenes of normalcy, to kind of orient the viewers. And this movie was lacking that, so I spent the whole movie just being kind of lost. The one thing this movie did well tho, was make you feel sympathy for all of the characters. They really...Read more

I really liked this movie. It is completely bizarre in a really enjoyable way. Annette Bening does an excellent job in her role, as do the other actors...but she stands out just a bit more than the others.

A movie you can laugh at, but which also has its sadder, more serious moments, this is a good film.

how much is biographical...

Apparently this film is based on the life of Augusten Burroughs, the author of the book "Running with Scissors". While I was not interested in the book, the movie was certainly enjoyable, but how much of it is really biographical... As Olivia says, it is "so unbelievable and yet so real". Some situations will make you laugh, and others you will simply be stunned! I took it as a comedy, but I'm not sure how funny this was supposed to be. If this is indeed Burroughs' life at the age of 15, he certainly had an interesting lifestyle and it obviously shaped his personality, and you either love or hate him. - It is a fascinating film, with a good cast. Paltrow, Bening, Baldwin, Cox, Fiennes... I simply can't imagine other actors giving these captivating performances.

You know that feeling you might get sometimes during a family reunion or a Christmas dinner; when the dog is chewing your aunt's earring while your mother is arguing with her father and the cousin is crying and the turkey got burned and it feels like you're the only sane person in the room? (And the other cousin is running around the house, with scissors.)

This movie probably takes it a step further, and it feels like that all the time.

I really liked it though. It's all so unbelievable and yet so real. I'd say it's worth a look.
