Romeo + Juliet (1996)

I adore Romeo and Juliet's lines and especially how everything was modernized in this film. I don't like Claire Danes but what the heck, Leonardo di Caprio is so Romeo. Thus with a kiss, I die. Thus with a kiss, I die.

Baz Luhrmann remakes the Bard's play for the MTV generation and gives it the strangest modern reinterpretation that could have happened. The characters all keep the Shakespearean language, thank God, but call guns swords and live in an area which resembles equal parts Miami and Venice Beach called, what else?, Verona Beach. DiCaprio and Danes handle the Shakespearean language way better than the 60s film version, and make a pretty young couple who die for each other seem very believable. The choir singing "When Doves Cry" is a post-modern plus, and a possible sign of things to come from Luhrmann in hindsight.

This film is the saving grace for all students studying the play for their GCSE Shakespearian English paper. Pumping rampant life into what is often perceived as a tired old verse. Everyone knows the age old story of ill fated love on the wrong side of the tracks, but this film spot on translates it into a modern context whereby the language barrier that exists for many just dissipates, as the talents and vibrancy of the cast render it invisible. The cinematography is stark and contrasting in its hard edge to the unduely rose-tinted tale. The soundtrack of contemporary, adapted and remixed songs adds yet another unexpected dimension of enjoyment to revel in.
