Rocky (1976)

While I tend to agree with the general consensus that this movie shouldn't have beat out other films like All The President's Men or Taxi Driver for the Best Picture Oscar, I still consider it my favorite of the this particular year. One of the reasons is just the nostalgic connection I have to this film. I remember watching this first installment of the Italian Stallion series as a child, & even at an age when I believed that the female sex to be rife with cooties, just adoring the love story between two "loser" types of Adrian & the original Rock. And this was probably the first movie I ever watched that literally hand me jumping up & down at the end. Sylvester Stallone's Rocky is an incredible triumphant accomplishment in film and one of the best films ever made! This classic tale of the underdog given a once-in-a-lifetime chance became an instant hit worldwide, and had a successful trip to the Oscars. Stallone plays an unknown boxer named Rocky Balboa - or nicknamed 'The Italian Stallion' - who is given the opportunity to box the heavyweight World Champion, Apollo Creed (Weathers), who just wants to sell tickets and make money. Rocky reluctantly seizes the opportunity and trains furiously to give this match all he can, and make the most for his shot for the big time. One of the most inspirational films of all time. Rocky documents a good-for-nothing bum who borders on the destitute side of life. Rocky has no prospects. He is broke, he works as a hired goon for the local loanshark and he even disappoints as a boxer. None of this sullies his good nature though and he remains a proud man with morals. The object of his desires is the sister of his best friend, Paulie, and during the corse of the film he manages to begin dating the girl who will serve as his personal inspiration for years to come. When Apollo Creed - the heavyweight champion of the world - comes to town, Rocky's life is turned upside down.
