One of the most inspirational films of all time. Rocky documents a good-for-nothing bum who borders on the destitute side of life. Rocky has no prospects. He is broke, he works as a hired goon for the local loanshark and he even disappoints as a boxer. None of this sullies his good nature though and he remains a proud man with morals. The object of his desires is the sister of his best friend, Pau... read more

"Apollo Creed vs. the Italian Stallion. Sounds like a damn monster movie."

The Rocky series may have ultimately degenerated into a flashy, soulless boxing franchise, but this first instalment is unlike the majority of its follow-ups - it is a remarkable, heartfelt, inspirational sports drama and a poignant character study concerning the determination of one man. It's easy to dismiss... read more

While I tend to agree with the general consensus that this movie shouldn't have beat out other films like All The President's Men or Taxi Driver for the Best Picture Oscar, I still consider it my favorite of the this particular year.
One of the reasons is just the nostalgic connection I have to this film. I remember watching this first installment of the Italian Stallion series as a child,... read more

"Training episode To go with the mentor figure, there's the training montage which gives our hero unbelievable strength in a matter of minutes. But don't bother calling it a training unless there's an energetic sports song to pump you up. The first thing that training montages bring to mind is Rocky and its fabulous sequels, but I challenge every reader here to hunt down a movie called The 36th Chamber of Shaolin. Why? Cause this Shaw Brothers classic is essentially a movie-long training episod"

A classic

“I have already seen this flick a couple of times but I thought it was time to watch it with Nick, my step-son. Honestly, I think he was pretty bored during most of the duration, because, let's face it, I contrary to what Sylvester Stallone did for the rest of his career, it is not really an action flick. Indeed, expect for the last 10 minutes for the final showdown, the rest of the movie is actually a rather grim drama. Nick is not really big on dramas but I thought it was pretty good. It was also rather funny to see Stallone having some many dialogs especially compared to what he did in the last 30 years during which has been usually blowing up some stuff or demolishing someone's face. Personally, I have some mixed feelings about the whole thing. I mean, on one hand, it is indeed a pretty” read more

"The climactic ending in which boxer Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), after "going the distance" with Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers), ignored interviewers and press crowding him in the ring, and instead called out for Adrian (Talia Shire): ("Adrian! ADRIAAAN!") - and finally after reaching her - holding and embracing her with a mutual "I love you!" to the sound of Bill Conti's triumphant score."

"The story is achingly familiar, and though Stallone has a certain power, he is certainly not the subtlest actor to crawl out from under Marlon's overcoat. Richard Schickel - TIME Magazine The screenplay of Rocky is purest Hollywood make-believe of the 1930's, but there would be nothing wrong with that, had the film been executed with any verve. - Vincent Canby, New York Times"
