Anyone who criticizes Rise of the Planet of the Apes for not developing its human characters as well as it develops its title characters is missing a few important points. The first thing that came to mind about the idea of a new film in the Planet Of The Apes series was this: what is Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes actually classed as? Is it a prequel where we find out how Earth became overrun by apes? Or is it a reboot and the start of something new? " The Ups: Surprisingly intelligent script that slowly tells how the apes grew intelligence and started to become something else than hairy human-like animals. It is a good warning story about not fucking with nature. Great effects as they are done as part of the story and not the other way around. The Downs: Tom Felton seem to forever be typecast as evil disturbed boys who like to torture creatures that sooner or later will kick back. Non-ending demands a sequel. "

Heartfelt & Deeply Human

“Okay, confession time- this is my first "Planet of the Apes" movie. I have never seen the Charlton Heston original. Hell, I haven't even seen the crappily reviewed Tim Burton film with Helena Bonham Carter and Mark Wahlberg.

But I have to say, despite my lack of experience with the 'Apes' franchise, this one grabbed my attention right away. This is up there with Neill Blomkamp's "District 9" as science fiction at its most emotionally charged, tinged with social commentary.

This is a star-studded cast- James Franco, John Lithgow, Tom Felton of the "Harry Potter" films- and yet the film belongs to the apes. These CGI wonders are incredibly realistic, and through the magic of modern technology, given the facial expressions of actors.
