Crimson Dawn...

''No, I never wanted to go to war. I just wanted to fly.'' A US Fighter pilot's epic struggle of survival after being shot down on a mission over Laos during the Vietnam War. Christian Bale: Dieter Written and directed by Werner Herzog Rescue Dawn tells the inspired by true events story of Dieter Dengler, an American Pilot shot down while flying a secret operation over Laos. We see a charismatic Bale flesh out Deiter as he begins his venture, he's happy, bright and full of vibrant energy with his work mate pilots. We see them all watching a training video, with one of them, sarcastically jokes over it's contents, while the others revel and bask in the humour. We also see Dieter ask for some much needed essentials to be made use of in the field, in case of any ground work. We ...Read more

A remarkable story

Werner Herzog's passion and enthusiasm for Dieter Dengler's remarkable story make Rescue Dawn stand-out amongst the best of a long tradition of p.o.w. films, a genre one could be forgiven for thinking had taken its last breath. A fascinating study of the strength of human will, grit and determination. I haven't seen Bale this good since The Machinist. I still prefer 'Little Dieter Needs To Fly' but I don't regret Werner's decision to dramatise Dieter's story now I've seen the results.

Visually beautiful, but not for everyone

Leave it to the eccentric Herzog to make a Vietnam War movie about 15 years after Hollywood stopped making Vietnam War movies. This movie is loosely based on real events of an air pilot's capture, life in a POW camp, and a daring prison break with his fellow american prisoners. If you know Herzog, you'll quickly notice his very sparse use of music, very slow-paced cinematography, and with all the sounds of the crickets in the jungle while time slowly passes by, I don't recommend watching this if you're tired (I fell asleep twice before I finally finished this film). But despite all that, it's truly a beautiful film. So if you are seeking a great film that's off the beaten path, might want to give Rescue Dawn a chance. But don't blame me if you fall asleep ;)...Read more
