Geoffrey Rush is the Marquis de Sade - writer of many pornographic tales and stuck in a mental institution. Kate Winslet is the laundry maid who is fascinated by him and Joaquin Phoenix is the Abbe who is infatuated by her.

Geoffrey Rush is brilliant in this movie as the Marquis de Sade. He should have won the oscar for this role in 2001 instead of Russell Crowe.

I wanted to check this movie for many years and I’m rather surprised that it took me so long to get my hands on it. Anyway, fortunately, I wasn’t disappointed. Indeed, there was a great cast (Geoffrey Rush, Kate Winslet, Joaquin Phoenix, Michael Caine) and they all delivered some solid performances. Above all, I was once again really impressed by Geoffrey Rush who was just terrific, as usual.... read more

Wildly entertaining wouldn’t be the first words that pop into my mind concerning a film about the Marquis de Sade. Disturbed, borderline pornographic, nihilistic, hedonism, and anarchy – these words seem to fit de Sade much better. Yet, here we are with Quills featuring a never better Geoffrey Rush as de Sade spending his last days locked up in a mental institution.

Description: Quills is a fictional account of the last days of the Marquis de Sade, the infamous, eighteenth-century writer. Here is the archetypal clash between the establishment forces of morality and the creative spirit of a subversive artist who enjoys spitting in the face of repressive authorities. The film presents some surprising twists and ... (more)

Maybe it has something to do with the decision to reframe the image of de Sade as a symbol, a martyr for artistic freedom and freedom of expression. Moving him away from the sexually dangerous aristocrat who believed he had a god given right to kill as a mode of seeking pleasure does tend to make a more palatable character. Any way you want to examine it, Quills manages to find a way to examine him and not leave ” read more

Movies the giraffe watched in 2014: Jan. & Feb. (20 movies items)

"First viewing - Jan. 25th/26th Hey, now I've doubled the number of films I've seen that start with the letter Q. Cool. The cast here is excellent, the story is entertaining, and yet I was never as deeply engaged by the whole thing as I'd hoped for. Some aspects were predictable, which also didn't help. So it wound up being worth watching once, but I couldn't help feeling at the end that I could also have skipped it for something better. Ah well."

A good movie

Indeed, there was a great cast (Geoffrey Rush, Kate Winslet, Joaquin Phoenix, Michael Caine) and they all delivered some solid performances. Above all, I was once again really impressed by Geoffrey Rush who was just terrific, as usual. He is definitely a very good actor and he is really underrated in my opinion. Furthermore, I thought it was a great approach to set the action in an asylum and it was quite impressive that, in spite of this dreary settings, there were still some hilarious scenes. Still, even though I really enjoyed it, it never managed to become truly remarkable though. Indeed, in my opinion, there were too many ” read more
