Description: This is an amazing film. What would happen if you raised a chimp as a human in an ordinary home and taught it sign language from infancy? Would it learn language? A professor and his hippie girlfriends tried this experiment during the 1970s with a chimp named Nim. Everyone of the dozen of humans who raised and cared for the chimp, bonded and communicated with Nim as if he were human. Nim was raised by a free-love mother who never disciplined him. When he got too strong to handle he was sent off to an animal farm where a long-haired hippy befriended him, and hung out everyday with him for years; he and Nim often smoked joints tog ... (more)

"Project Nim tells the story of the chimpanzee who was the focus of a landmark experiment to show that an ape could learn to communicate with language if raised and nurtured like a human child. After Herb, the university researcher, realizes that the adult Nim is a chimp (d’oh!), with all a chimpanzee’s strength and unpredictability, he sends Nim back to the Oklahoma facility where Nim has to be in a dark cage for the first time in his life. When the facility runs out of money, Nim is sold t"

"Coming from James Marsh I had high expectations and thankfully this documentary is well-done and not a miss from him. However I still find myself disappointed, but I think that's mainly because I didn't like any of the subjects, which is only Marsh's fault in the fact that he seems convinced they are interesting and/or at least likable. Nim, however: Likable as fuck. Even when he gets into his hostile stage. "

" March 25th - On the surface Project Nim appears to be just a documentary about the experiment of trying to explore a chimps capacity for language by teaching him sign language. However, as the film progresses it is quickly evident that this is Nim's story. That scientific study is only a small part of his life and what he is able or unable able to prove is irreverent. He is a living, breathing animal and the documentary is able to display that and create a connection between him and the aud"
