Porco Rosso (Kurenai no buta) (1992)

This is definitely a film aimed at an older audience I think. It's probably not as easy to pick up as Howl's or Spirited Away for younger viewers. The story tells of Porco Rosso, an archetypal fly-boy who protects the mediterranean from bungling sky pirates. Widely regarded as a hero, Porco lives alone in his island retreat until a brash young american top-gun turns up and calls him out to fight. Cue the classic war-time story of two servicemen competing for the affections of a helpless dame. The competition is never really in any doubt and you soon realise that it is Porco's own pig-headedness (pun intended) that is preventing him from getting the girl.
