Underwhelming. That was my first thought after finishing Pocahontas. Granted, my expectations may have been a bit high, but this IS renaissance Disney after all. Frankly, Pocahontas is not one of Disney's greats, or even one of their goods. It's a mediocre film with some marvelous musical numbers placed between uninteresting filler.

Loosely based off of the real story of Pocahontas,... read more

Best Fictional Historical Movie Ever!

Despite the fact that this movie is more inaccurate than internet rumors regarding the assassination of Osama bin Laden, it's still pretty gosh darn good. The art, like all Disney movies, is exceptional, and the music just rocks meh face off. The story moves well and although it may be a bit traumatic for youngsters, it's still pretty gosh darn great.

Sometimes, even when you don’t expect much fidelity to actual events, Hollywood will really surprise you with the amount of bullshit they’ll pile up and the coats of whitewashing they’ll use. Pocahontas has long been one of those types of films for me. When people proclaim that Disney traffics in churning out one bland concoction after another in which there is only true love as the answer t... read more

Description: Capt. John Smith leads a rag-tag band of English sailors & soldiers to the New World to plunder its riches for England (or, more precisely, for Governor Ratcliffe, who comes along for the ride). Meanwhile, in this "New World," Chief Powhatan has pledged his daughter, Pocahontas, to be married to the village's greatest wa ... (more)

A good movie

“I saw it again recently (I actually even bought the DVD when vacationing in France) and I thought it was actually pretty good. I'm not sure though if I have seen it in the theater when it was released. Anyway, even though it was a success at the box-office, it tends to get overlooked which is actually not really surprising. Indeed, this movie was the beginning of the end of the Disney Golden Age and it followed up such massive success like 'The Lion King', 'Aladdin', 'Beauty and the Beast' and 'The Little Mermaid'. Of course, compared to those, it wasn't so successful but, as a stand-alone, it is actually pretty good. First of all, the animation was, as usual, very stunning. Indeed, it is a very gorgeous animated feature. The soundtrack was also pretty good but I think they should have dro” read more

Frankly, Pocahontas is not one of Disney's greats, or even one of their goods. It's a mediocre film with some marvelous musical numbers placed between uninteresting filler.

In this case, that man is John Smith. John Smith, being European, and known for killing savages, is of course, initially opposed by the tribe Pocahontas comes from. But John Smith comes to understand the Indians as intelligent and resourceful people, though the villainou” read more

Pocahontas

Pocahontas has long been one of those types of films for me. When people proclaim that Disney traffics in churning out one bland concoction after another in which there is only true love as the answer to all of life’s problems, they’re talking about a movie like Pocahontas.

Dubious, if not outright offensive, as a history lesson (and trust me, many people my age mostly know of the story of Pocahontas from this film), Pocahontas suffers from artistic liberties taken with the narrative in order to recreate the tired stereotype of the Noble Savage and the White Man’s Guilt, thrown i” read more
