(A review of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl)''When you marooned me on that god forsaken spit of land, you forgot one very important thing, mate: I'm Captain Jack Sparrow.''
Blacksmith Will Turner teams up with eccentric pirate "Captain" Jack Sparrow to save his love, the governor's daughter, from Jack's former pirate allies, who are now undead.
Johnny Depp: Jack Sparrow
Pirates of the Carribean - The curse of the Black Pearl is one of the hits and most enjoyable thing to come out of a Disney collaboration for years. A return to form without a doubt.
The cast in Pirates was simply divine and they generously let rip with all the fun, becoming infectious for us, the audience.
Although they did not let this sacrifice one shred of dedication to their respective performances.
Jack Davenport, Orlando Bloom, Geoffrey Rush, and outrageously talented Johnny Depp just swept us away.
Starlet Kiera Knightley, not bad given her young age, dazzles and shines in all her glory during the film.
Davenport, Rush and Depp all delivered reasonably complex characters despite the superficial story line. Norrington is ambitious but also has a strong compassionate streak. Barbossa's integrity is his evilness, yet we can also see his weaknesses and humanity. Sparrow is like that friend we all have who is a bad boy but would do anything for you in the end, along with the many other traits Depp built into this character. Depp, by far, is the one who jumped off the screen and grabbed you and pulled you into the show. It's hard to say more, the guy is just astonishingly freakin' talented.
''Put it away, son. It's not worth you getting beat again.''
''You didn't beat me. You ignored the rules of engagement. In a fair fight, I'd kill you.''
''That's not much incentive for me to fight fair, then, is it?''
I think that there were some nice themes in this movie. I especially liked the ending, given that Jack Sparrow spent a good deal of the movie in handcuffs, in jail, in the brig, walking the plank, stranded on an island, with guns pointed at him, on the gallows, etc. Combine all of that with his confession to Elizabeth (on the Island) of what the Black Pearl really is. Did we get set up to love that ending or what? I also like that the movie started and ended on the same song, and that Elizabeth at the beginning held the key to Jack's situation at the ending.
The scenes with Jack and Barbossa in them together were by far the best. It takes until about halfway through the movie until we get them face to face. Their exchange at the plank-walking was priceless, as was the "parle" on board the Pearl. But that sword fight in the cave took all! It's new and it's classic all at once and it just feels like what pirate-movie-making should be all about.
There's a lot of great action in the movie complete with sword fights and guns. The movie also boasts a hefty amount of comedy as well, mostly provided by a couple of goofy pirates who continuously bicker and fight and do all sorts of crazy things together. The highlight scene in the movie is when right before Captain Jack battles Barbossa, the undead pirates are coming from beneath the ships and revert from human form to skeleton form when the enter the moonlight.
''You're daft, lady! You both are!''
''Daft like Jack.''
Black Pearl is truly a classic, it's humourous, it's imaginative, and it's full of swashbuckling action. It must have been a gamble trying to make a movie laugh out loud action about pirates, but they pulled it off with shining results.
The special effects for this movie are breath taking for a Disney Film and the time. This is the best of the series in my opinion, but the sequels go downhill, for money and Box-Office, whereas this Gold offering retains originality.
Gore Verbinski has directed a memorable class offering that will be considered an unforgettable experience for generations to come. Black Pearl like Matrix for example shows how the original can exist on it's own without any need for a sequel.
''The only rules that really matter are these: what a man can do and what a man can't do.''

(A review of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl)I loved this movie so much. I love Depp he is AWESOME. What was so cool was the cursed pirates they looked all creepy and icky it's like heaven for me I wish I was elizabeth. The monkey was the cutest. I think the most funniest character was the pirate with the fake eye always falling out. But I also thought Jack Sparrow was second on the most funniest characters for me. Barbosa was so cool it was to bad he died but I loved that he comes back in At Worlds End.

High-action Pirate Adventure

(A review of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl)Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl provides a fresh, funny adventure story that you can watch over and over. I would bet that when I first heard about Pirates of the Caribbean, I rolled my eyes. I couldn't imagine how one could make a movie out of a theme park ride. Yet, director Gore Verbinski has managed to make a film with excellent action and endearing characters. The movie has a complex plot, interrelated characters, and lots of action. Johnny Depp steals the show as Captain Jack, and the script gives him some very funny lines. The effects on the undead crew as they transition between human and skeletal forms, generally left me amazed.

(A review of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl)Every so often a film comes along that completely dominates at the box office, despite its relatively modest arrival on the scene. Pirates of the Caribbean is an example of such a film, which seemingly appeared out of the left field with very little fanfare, yet managed to spawn a multi-billion dollar franchise out of its success. Pirates is an epic sea-faring adventure which ticks all of the right action boxes and is coupled to a generous side portion of comedy that dissolves intense scenes and makes for enjoyable repeated viewing. Being a Disney movie, it's safe to say that the film is aimed at a relatively young audience, but such is its popularity and appeal, there is something for viewers of all ages.
The cast list these days reads as 'all-star', though back in 2003, it's probably safe to say that Keira Knightly was not a household name and I'd never heard of Geoffrey Rush, but this movie and its sequels have helped make international stars of the actors involved. Not only that, but it's contribution to pop-culture is massive. This film will be remembered as one of the most defining of the opening years of the twentieth century. There is no doubt that nowadays pirates are 'cool' in real life, almost to the point of lethargy, though before this movie, I can't remember a successful genre-defining film that ever focused on the much-romanticised plunderers of the open sea.
The story focuses on the exploits of an unlikely team up comprising of world-renowned pirate, Captain Jack Sparrow, and a noble pirate-hating blacksmith, Will Turner, who form an unholy alliance in order that Will might save his love interest and Jack might win back his eponymous ship The Black Pearl - which are both being held by Jack's treacherous former first mate, Hector Barbossa. After commandeering a ship from the bungling Royal Navy, Jack and Will recruit a crew and set off in search of Barbossa and his cursed pirate mob. In a classic tale involving pirate codes, disloyalties and mistrust on the high seas, sword fights, black magic, a brief love quadrangle and some wholly impressive special effects (all of which being coupled to an epic score), the protagonists form something of an uneasy yet deeply respectful bond with each other as they strive to achieve their goals and retrieve what is rightfully theirs.

Johnny Depp's portrayal of the charismatic and lovable Jack Sparrow is the true star of the show. He is the linchpin of the entire trilogy and there's no doubt in my mind that the success of the entire franchise is thanks to his tremendous acting. The appreciation that Johnny Depp receives from rabid fangirls these days, and the adulation of Jack Sparrow on the whole are all a result of this tremendous performance. Flamboyant and hilarious, Jack Sparrow - from his legendary entry into Port Royal to his courageous final escape - is a character that cannot be overlooked and has to receive every plaudit. I'm not the biggest fan of either Orlando Bloom or Keira Knightly, but their performances are dwarfed by Depp's acting and as a result, I still enjoyed the film. Hector Barbossa is a worthwhile opponent for Jack, as his evil is so uncomplex and simple that it complements the eccentric - yet inept captain to a tee.
Filled with quirky sidekicks and supporting characters throughout, there are recognisable actors that are more than able to keep the story ticking over during the slower moments of this deceptively long film. When all is said and done, Pirate's will be remembered as a film where memorable characters were seemingly interwoven with glorious special effects in beautiful locations on an adventure that could be enjoyed indiscriminately by family members of all ages.

(A review of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl)Absolutely perfect in every possible way. This is easily my favourite of the series, introducing the best character ever created - Captain Jack Sparrow. It's got comedy, action, adventure, romance and Johnny Depp! The perfect film with an amazing cast and truly unique and original storyline. Jack Sparrow has become like an icon for Johnny Depp, he will always be remembered as the greatest, wildest and most charming pirate ever to make it in a movie. Anyone who hasn't seen this must be crazy!
