Description

Inventor Gepetto creates a wooden marionette called Pinocchio. His wish that Pinocchio be a real boy is unexpectedly granted by a fairy. The fairy assigns Jiminy Cricket to act as Pinocchio's "conscience" and keep him out of trouble. Pinocchio is, quite easily, one of the greatest animated American films of all time. The fluidity of the animation is astounding. The characters posses weight and can move it from side to side. The wooden puppet at the beginning moves in the awkward way that a marionette does. Once Pinocchio becomes a living puppet he retains the way that younger children hold their body and move about – a little awkward, constantly bending their knees and swaying, trying to figure out the operating instructions still. It is this commitment to making the characters seem like real people that truly makes this film a classic. Well, that and the cast is fully realized and well acted. Oh, Pinocchio.
