an extraordinary masterpiece

Spain. 1944. Ofelia, a girl fascinated by fairy tales, is sent with her pregnant mother to meet and live with her new stepfather, Capitan Vidal, a particularly sadistic character. One night Ofelia meets a fairy, is told she is a princess and encounters the faun Pan. To prove her royalty, she must execute specific albeit gruesome tasks.

Sergi Lopez as the Capitan is excellent, as are... read more

I was very surprised with this film. I have no idea what I was expecting except it was maybe more a children's film then anything else. Jeez was I mistaken! Obviously I hadn't heard much about it.

For starters it was far too violent in parts for children and younger children may have found it more on the scary side. For adults though (including young adults) it was excellent. It was... read more

This is definately one of the best films I've seen in a long time. Everything was just so amazingly good! The storyline, the characters, the acting, the music, the graphics and effects, they were all just about perfect. All of these together make the film beautiful and touching, yet at the same time suspenseful. The elements of horror and graphic violence in the film add to it's realism, a perfect... read more

Movie Reviews (part 851-900) (50 movies items)

" The Ups: Beautifully designed with colorful unique creatures in a dark fable landscape. The disturbing realistic story fits perfectly with the young girl's daydreams. Unique and poetic. Magnificently played. The Downs: Well it has a depressing happy ending that will be hard to take for some if you start to think about the consequences for the family in real life. "

Fantastic.

“Guillermo del Toro first movie that I've seen, i was planning to watch Pacific rim, but decided to watch his old movies first, and i'm glad i did, the movie is amazing.

The Special effects were beautiful executed and felt so real even though the creatures aren't real (don't ask me how).

I really like the way that he mixed reality with fairytale, mixing an actual war with a fairytale balanced that movie and made it likable, aside from that the story was beautiful, the performances was also great and this is really an amazing movie that you don't want to miss.” read more

“This is likely Guillermo del Toro's best film he has ever done! A fantasy for adults that's extremely violent, but at the same time, it's the most beautiful artistic achievement in production values, music, and cinematography.” read more
