OUT OF THE PAST

This was the movie that first made me aware of "film noir" although in those days they were just known as thrillers and nothing more than that. Over the years these black and white movies have gathered a cult following. "Out of the Past" stars Robert Mitchum and the gorgeous Jane Greer. It is a sordid tale about former private detective Jeff Markham (Robert Mitchum) trying to escape his unsavoury ... read more

Probably, the most essential film noir ever made. Basically, you have here everything, the raincoats, the hats, the omnipresent cigarettes, the gansters, the detective, the femmes fatale and the double-crossing intrigues. The directing is quite brilliant and makes you wish that they were still making some black and white movies. Robert Mitchum and Kirk Douglas (in his 2nd role!) were just awesome ... read more

May 2013 Movie Journal - Xanadon't (18 movies items)

" Quintessentially film-noir, Out of the Past feels like one of those classics that I should've seen years ago, and am now returning to rather than watching for the first time. Robert Mitchum absolutely kills in this movie-- his screen presence is immense and seemingly effortless. He has a casual, laid-back, almost cocky kind of way about him. Part of why it works so well is because he looks more like, say, a hockey player, than a Golden Era Hollywood star. His gruff, everyman persona is at on"

"17.01. Cinema, 1st viewing DIRECTED BY Jacques Tourneur A good film noir that starts out fairly simply and well until it gradually gets really complicated and almost incomprehensible. Everyone seems to be stabbing everyone's backs and I kept confusing names especially as the screening had no subtitles. Anyway, for me, the film picked up steam after the confusing middle part. In the end, I did love the way it handled its themes about the shadows of your past always haunting you. The mysterious "

" This is now one of my favorites of the Film Noir genre. I'm going to have to go back and watch "Night of The Hunter". Watching Robert Mitchum go from good-guy rolls to the roll of villain has been a fun cinematic journey."
