With a closing tag of “Some animals were harmed during the production of this film” enjoy “The Water Shrew”, a pastoral segment of the nature series Our Wonderful Nature in which a Spring day in the life of one of Europe’s best loved mammals is brought vividly to life. Glorious live action footage of birds and insects with both German and English commentaries do justice to the great tradition of natural history documentaries. Of course, part of the attraction of these documentaries is seeing the unsavoury habits of our wildlife and the shrew has its little quirks, exploited fully by director Tomer Eshed whose animated grey furry thing kicks the stuffing out of its rivals. Music by Stefan Maria Schneider is deceptive and, for those aficionados of gore, there is a slow motion, kung fu sequence to salivate over. Originally graduating from the School of Arts in 1995 in Jerusalem and, following his national service, Tomer gravitated to the Academy for Film and Television, Konrad Wolf in Potsdam where he graduated in 2007. Made a year later, Our Wonderful Nature is his first independent movie, the winner of several awards including last year's aniBoom awards where it won the jury prize. A cleverly deceptive and humorous movie.
