A very interesting story about the emotional roller coaster that a dysfunctional family went through because of the tragic, premature and accidental death of one of their children. "Conrad" Timothy Hutton (French Kiss) very deservingly won an Oscar for the part of the surviving son. Conrad was a very sensitive young man, who learned how to cope with depression after the death of his brother, and w... read more

I still don’t think that Ordinary People deserved a few of its Oscar wins over Raging Bull, but it’s easy to see why this film was so beloved by voters. It’s not as boundary pushing as Scorsese’s character portrait, but it tells a simple, yet devastating, story of a well-to-do family disintegrating after the death of their oldest son. As an upper-class couple more concerned with appearance... read more

Ordinary People

“I still don’t think that Ordinary People deserved a few of its Oscar wins over Raging Bull, but it’s easy to see why this film was so beloved by voters. It’s not as boundary pushing as Scorsese’s character portrait, but it tells a simple, yet devastating, story of a well-to-do family disintegrating after the death of their oldest son. As an upper-class couple more concerned with appearances than properly displaying emotions, Ordinary People sees this family flailing about trying to kept it together, deal with the past, and move on from it.

The film mostly follows the exploits of the teenaged son, Conrad (Timothy Hutton, in his debut film role), as he returns home from an extended stay in a mental institution. Conrad is living under a dark cloud of guilt and is begging his” read more

25 From 80: My Favorite Films Of 1980 (25 movies items)

"A family portrayal that depicts how even the most ordinary people are not very ordinary. And that trying to live a life of normalcy can often be much more of an emotional household hindrance than it is as a sign of achievement of the American dream. Before I ever saw this movie, I thought that Mary Tyler Moore was the most beautiful, heart-warming human beings ever to be onscreen. After I watched Ordinary People, I couldn't stand to even look at her. Now that's acting."

Netflix Movie Stream Awards 2013 (26 movies items)

"FAVORITE ENSEMBLE PERFORMANCE FROM A NETFLIX FILM Timothy Hutton, Donald Sutherland, Mary Tyler Moore, and Judd Hirsch, “Ordinary People” This category is now not just awarding the great performance of one actor/character but multiple that occurred in one film. When a film is filled with capable actors that provide plenty of spectacular performances, oftentimes difficult to judge which actor stood out from the rest. The winner of this award goes to the film with the greatest ensemble of spe"

"The moving scene of suicidal, guilt-ridden high-school student Conrad "Con" Jarrett (Timothy Hutton) admitting his feelings about his older brother's accidental drowning (during a sailing trip) in his late-night therapy session with the psychiatrist Dr. Berger (Judd Hirsch): ("What was the one thing wrong you did?", "I hung on") and the therapist's reassurance: "I am your friend, Count on it", and the climactic scene in which Conrad's compassionate and warm-hearted father Calvin (Donald Sutherla"

Best Picture - Winners and My Choices - 80s (10 movies items)

"WINNER: Ordinary People OTHER NOMINEES: Coal Miner's Daughter The Elephant Man Raging Bull Tess MY CHOICE: Raging Bull The oft-repeated myth of the 1980s Best Picture race is that Martin Scorcese's 'Raging Bull' was the obvious choice that should have effortlessly swept everything else aside. But to buy into this myth is to do a disservice to the other nominees because 1980 was an excellent year for the category. We have, for instance, David Lynch's exquisite 'The Elephant Man', a "

Movies I've Streamed On Netflix Instant Watch (86 movies items)

" This is the first movie I've actually re-watched on Netflix Instant. I remember watching Ordinary People in 9th Grade English class because we were reading "The Catcher in the Rye". Of course, the novel didn't have a film adaption but this movie has similarities to the classic novel. I was surprised at how much I really loved this movie. I mean the characters, writings, and cinematography are all masterfully done. I always get an emotional experience watching this film. It really shows the co"
