Absolutely terrifying. Open Water is a gripping tale about what happens when things go completely, terribly, cruelly, wrong. Like, "how can there be a God in the universe" wrong. Everything about this film grabbed my attention-- from the amatuer production value and the none-the-less interesting and highly-skilled camera work, to the convincing, natural-feeling performances, to the growing sense o... read more

didn't meet expectations

I was curious and bought the DVD. But now after watching it, I am going to sell it again. This is definitely not the movie you want to watch twice.

The whole idea of the plot is cool (two people alone on the ocean, but there is just to little going on and that what is happening ("something touched my leg") is hard to show on film.
Would have been an awesome book ...

Entertaining, But Depressing.

Let me start out by saying, that this film, is not supposed to have a great plot, or great acting. This is just one of those films, to entertain an audience. The plot is a little like this: a couple, goes on vacation, to some area with a lot of water (the name of the place escapes me). While on a boat, going out for a deep sea diving excursion, they are left behind, by their fellow crew members. W... read more

Description: Proving that the power of imagination is much more terrifying than what meets the eye, OPEN WATER is Chris Kentis's intensely realistic deep-sea drama, "based on true events." The film's leering digital video camera allows viewers to float like shark-bait, stranded in the middle of the ocean with Susan and Daniel (Blanchard ... (more)

“Independent filmmaker Chris Kentis directs the dramatic thriller Open Water, based on a true story. Susan (Blanchard Ryan) and Daniel (Daniel Travis) are a busy married couple on an island vacation. They board a vessel called the Reef Explorer with a group of other scuba divers, traveling 15 miles out to sea. Since they are certified to dive in open waters, the couple breaks off from the group to go exploring. The Reef Explorer accidentally leaves without a proper head count, leaving them stranded in shark-infested waters. Kentis and producer wife Laura Lau did all the filming themselves in the actual ocean without extraneous special effects, while the actors wore special steel-mesh under their wetsuits in the scenes where actual sharks were involved. Open Water was shown at the Sundance F” read more

3003 Movies Into the Golden Age!!!...so far? (3003 movies items)

"Directed by Chris Kentis A terrific experiment, "Blair Witch Project" taken to a whole new perspective, with subsequently nerve wracking results. This was a box office success when it was first released, taking home $2.5 million ($55 million worldwide), not bad considering it only cost $500, 000 to make. This film has a definite low-fi approach to it, and contains an urgent sense of terror, the likes of which makes "Jaws" pretty much obsolete (that movie already was for me pretty much, read my "

Most Unfairly Overlooked Movies Of The Decade (23 movies items)

" Open Water is the exact opposite of almost every horror movie you've seen lately. A couple on holiday goes scuba diving and through accidental circumstances gets abandoned out in the ocean without a boat, all alone, with sharks circling around. What follows is pure, gut-wrenching terror as they float together, waiting for death as sharks circle and clouds form and things go from bleak to certain doom. It's an exercise in stripped down restraint, almost the entire movie is spent o"

A good movie

“I have noticed that this movie has reached some rather mixed reactions. Indeed, if you check the reviews on this website, half of the people are praising it and the other half think it was one of the worst thing that they had ever seen. After watching the damned thing, I was actually rather surprised by the low ratings on IMDB and Listal. Indeed, I thought it was actually a really solid movie. Of course, there was nothing much going on but that was exactly the point here and if you expected some explosions, cool special effects or awesome car chases, you should definitely watch something else. Basically, it is one of those movies where they don't really show you what is actually scary but you can read it on the faces of the leads then you have to try to put yourself in their shoes and, the” read more

Everything about this film grabbed my attention-- from the amatuer production value and the none-the-less interesting and highly-skilled camera work, to the convincing, natural-feeling performances, to the growing sense of menace and hopelessness. The human survival instinct element of this film creates immense feelings of tension, sympathy, and dread for the stranded couple, and really hi-jacks the viewer in a visceral way. Before long we have more impending crisis on hand than you can shake a bang-stick at. Dehydration, hypothermia, exhaustion, mental breakdown, muscle cramps/failure, and, oh yeah, hungry mouths” read more
