The story unfolds through Kerouac’s prose, first-hand recollections from Kerouac’s contemporaries as well as writers, poets, actors and musicians who have been deeply influenced by Kerouac’s unique gifts and by stunning, High Definition visual imagery set to original music composed and performed by recording artists Jay Farrar of Son Volt and Benjamin Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie.
Big Sur is an evocative account of a time in Jack’s life when he’d “come undone,” both emotionally and spiritually. He escapes to a cabin in Big Sur to confront his inner demons and find a modicum of peace by the sea. The film features cameos by Sam Shepard, Tom Waits, Amber Tamblyn, Patti Smith, Robert Hunter, Lawrence Ferlinghetti and many others.
Jack Kerouac’s novel Big Sur was the lyrical compass for the compelling documentary soundtrack composed by celebrated recording artist Jay Ferrar (Son Volt, Uncle Tupelo) and performed together with Benjamin Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie, The Postal Service). The hauntingly intimate lyrics were taken directly from the pages of Kerouac’s Big Sur, and melded into a series of acoustic melodies over the course of three days.... (more)(less)
