Departures

3 years, 11 months ago at Feb 29 14:31
When everyone thought that "Departures" was selected among the five finalists to win the Oscar for best foreign language film, just to meet the quota of Asian cinema, when we all were debating between 'class' and' Waltz with Bashir ', appeared Yojiro Takita's film and broke the bank. Neither the frustrating problems of French education system, not rote gaps of the Israelite nation. The Academy end... read more

A good movie

According to Roger Ebert, this was one of the best movies coming out in 2009 and it won the Academy Award fot the best foreign movie so I was definitely curious about it. It had been a while since I watched a Japanese movie and within the first 10 minutes, I understood why I was always so found of those. The directing and acting was so understated and quite fascinating to behold. It is such a big ... read more

Movies the giraffe watched in 2015: July (27 movies items)

"First viewing - July 20th Despite the fact this one leaves Netflix soon, I'm placing it here since it was part of my plans for my monthly focus anyway. I can't even recall anymore when or why I decided to check it out, or if maybe I picked it up from my ex's queue thinking it'd be interesting. Whatever the case I'm glad I finally gave it a shot. The entire cast is excellent & amazing. I loved the subtlety of the message as delivered by the story, as well as riding through the highs & lows with"

Movie Diary 2013 (118 movies items)

"Second view. I gave it 8/10 first time. Tired of boring Japanese tea ceremonies everywhere (you can see a couple of them here too, aha)? Try Japanese dead dressing ceremonies instead. Quite boring too, but hey, ceremonies are not famous for their surprising twists. The movie brings a lighter look at death due to his characteristic comedy feel, but still maintaining the respect and dignity that death requires. Not bad. The stone at the end means "too late buddy". "

A good movie

“According to Roger Ebert, this was one of the best movies coming out in 2009 and it won the Academy Award fot the best foreign movie so I was definitely curious about it. It had been a while since I watched a Japanese movie and within the first 10 minutes, I understood why I was always so found of those. The directing and acting was so understated and quite fascinating to behold. It is such a big difference with Western movies, especially American movies, which tends to explain every single thing happening on the screen, something I always find rather boring. Furthermore, this movie deals with a very interesting ceremony dealing with the cleansing of dead bodies before they're cremated. It is something we obviously don't have in the Western culture and those proceedings were rather emotion” read more
