When everyone thought that "Departures" was selected among the five finalists to win the Oscar for best foreign language film, just to meet the quota of Asian cinema, when we all were debating between 'class' and' Waltz with Bashir ', appeared Yojiro Takita's film and broke the bank. Neither the frustrating problems of French education system, not rote gaps of the Israelite nation. The Academy end... read more
According to Roger Ebert, this was one of the best movies coming out in 2009 and it won the Academy Award fot the best foreign movie so I was definitely curious about it. It had been a while since I watched a Japanese movie and within the first 10 minutes, I understood why I was always so found of those. The directing and acting was so understated and quite fascinating to behold. It is such a big ... read more

"When his orchestra is disbanded, a cellist mistakenly gets employed as a professional encoffiner and finds his true calling. Not without a healthy dose of societal drama though. A heartwarming tale.

Hieman surullinen, tyylikkäästi hauska, mutta ennenkaikkea uskomattoman kaunis elokuva onnistuu käsittelemään kuolemaan varsin rauhallisella ja seesteisellä tavalla ilman sen kummempia vuodatuksia, pystyen samalla aiheuttamaan kuitenki varsin vahvojakin tunteita. Ohjaus toimii erittäin hyvin ja elokuva onkin hyvää visuaalista karkkia, jota säestetään rauhallisella sellomusiikilla. Näyttelijät tekevät uskottavaa työtä ja etenkin Masahiro Motoki vetää erittäin tyylipuhtaa"

There is nothing really bad to say about this. It's just your basic and well-done drama, not exactly original or artsy, but something simple. That doesn't matter, since even while being simple the outcome can be magnificent. Some scenes are a bit sentimental, but that doesn't get too annoying at any point, luckily. More so my problem lies within the fact that I just didn't care much. I didn't feel bored or like that this would've felt too mediocre or forgettable, but I didn't get much"
