I think this is the best russian movie I have ever watched. They've put a lot of money in it and I think it was worth it. I gave this movie nine stars instead of ten, just because of the ending. They have separeted the book into two movies, but the first one doesn't have its own ending. It just stops. That was the only negative aspect.

I must say that I read the original source, which in general is a fan of creative Strugatsky brothers and quite picky viewer. The «Inhabited Island» book was written by the Strugatsky Brothers in 1968. For people separated from the Western world by the iron curtain, the book became almost dissident. Also to the present day, the «Inhabited Island» remains one of the most popular and favorite novels by the classics of the domestic science fiction.
About 1,700 costumes were developed and sewed for the movie (only for the main character the designers developed 10 variants of clothes). Some costumes were embroidered with crystals of the Swarovski Company which also manufactured an exclusive line consisting of two hundred decorations especially for the movie. Furthermore, there were manufactured about 400 footwear pairs, as well as 50 exclusive bag models.
«Inhabited Island» was extremely complex for the make-up artists. For the movie characters, tens of variants of special make-up and hairstyles were developed. These developments used unique technologies which have no analogues in Russia.
CGI is an important element of the movie. A joint studio group worked on the development of three-dimensional models and drafts. Besides domestic artists, the syndicate includes foreign partners who had provided computer design for several Hollywood movies.... (more)(less)

Yes, the movie is something removed, something added, but it is quite normal, since the film was withdrawn not by the book and the script, and he can not vary. Yes, an extra insert (for example, the prophet puppeteer), but the scene in 30 seconds can not be so drastically spoil a 2-hour film.
