A great classic

In the 60's, Antonioni was a major movie director and La Notte was one of his masterpieces. Moreau and Mastroianni both shine here with great perfomances. A very deep movie which doesn't deal with chases, shootings, explosions and special effects but with relationships and the human mind in general. Definitely worth a look.

Description: Marcello Mastroianni (La Dolce VIta, 8 1/2) and Jeanne Moreau (Jules And Jim, The Bride Wore Black) are affluent but emotionally estranged spouses in Michelangelo Antonioni's 1961 post-neorealistic classic La Notte. After ten years of marriage, Giovanni, a successful novelist, and his wife Lidia have grown apart. He is no longer attra ... (more)

"2/8 La Notte displays adamantly, if nothing else, the uncanny ability Michelangelo Antonioni has to portray everything with nothing. Almost all shots in La Notte are imbued with meaning, but they're also very empty, minimalistic even. There is always a clear focus and rarely anything else within the camera's focus or heck, even in the background. But what the camera is focusing on is always of utmost importance to everything, even if it is a completely mundane mood shot when viewed from a purel"

"26.11. DVD, 1st viewing DIRECTED BY Michelangelo Antonioni It's funny how Antonioni's films about alienation feel so distant to me. Like with the other film I've seen from his "alienation trilogy", L'avventura, I could definitely appreciate the directing and writing, though. There is obviously a lot of psychological depth into these films and lots of hidden meanings - I loved those tiny, genius moments such as the elevator door closing behind Giovanni when the young lady tempts him or the hel"
