In my mind this will always be Hitchcock's greatest work, as well as one of my favorite movies of all time. As a film it is nearly flawless and it entertains and captivates from start to finish. One of Hitch's last black and white features, this one is as timeless as it was innovative. Admire for instance the crane shot that begins as an overhead view of mingling party-goers, then swoops down from... read more

I actually already saw this movie but it was a long time ago, when I was a teenager but even though I enjoyed it, I didn't see what was so great about it. Indeed, I thought that the story was interesting but I didn't care much about the love story. However, since I kept hearing good things about this movie, especially from my good friend Xanadon't who thinks it is one of the finest movies ever mad... read more

Description: At the end of World War II, American military intelligence drafts the alluring daughter (Bergman) of a convicted Nazi to infiltrate a band of nefarious Germans who have fled to Brazil. She is teamed with a dashing but chilly agent (Cary Grant) with whom she falls deeply in love. Because of her past, however, the rigid and judgmental agent refuses to trust her--and their relationship falls completely apart when she agrees to marry the ringleader of the Germans in order to have better access to information. The marriage touches off an intricate downward spiral of deceit and betrayal, leaving Bergman trapped in the home of an enemy ... (more)

Movie Reviews (201-250) (50 movies items)

" The Ups: One of those remarkable Hitchcock movies that manage to be both hugely romantic and nail-biting even if there is not a single shot fired. Claude Rains play a Nazi one feel sorry for as this charismatic slime ball is trapped between a dominating mother and a weak will. Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman sparks with wonderful chemistry and I could just see them alone in scenes after scenes. Great visual touches from the master with an ending that is both hopeful and tragic at the same time. O"

Exploring Hitchcock (7/12-7/25) (14 movies items)

"A fucking borefest with some of the worst character writing I've seen from a film considered to be one of the best ever made. Ingrid Bergman is always fantastic and gorgeous, but Claude Rains was (surprisingly) underwhelming, as was Cary Grant. Really this film had little to offer except for a few rather thrilling scenes in its second act (the final act was kind of awful). Such a shame, and one of the most overrated films I think I've ever had the displeasure of seeing."

Overrated films (20 movies items)

"I really do enjoy a good lot of Hitchock's films (Vertigo might be my all time favorite film), and I really wanted to like Notorious. The only thing I got out of it was a convincing performance from Ingrid Bergman. There was horrible character drama, nonexistent character dynamics (seriously, no sexual tension existed and we're supposed to be moved by Cary Grant finally kissing Ingrid Bergman? Or Claude Rains attempting to poison her? There was no initial dynamic so I just didn't care). The plot"

Nick's Top 100 Films (100 movies items)

""The suspense is terrific: Will suspicious, passive Grant succeed in making Bergman seduce him, or will he take over? The honor of the American male is saved by a hairbreadth, but Bergman is literally ravishing in what is probably her sexiest performance." - Pauline Kael"
