The epic of the No campaign in Chile, narrated by a fimmaker rooted in publicity. The No spots had the humour, vitality, risk, profound comprehension of political marketing as one kind of marketing, that the film itself, has not.

March-April 2013 Movie Journal (28 movies items)

" No looks like a movie about politics, but it isn't. It's about advertising. Then again, when you're done watching this, it's not unwarranted to conclude that they're the same thing. The movie does get repetitive by a certain point (kind of like when you're watching TV and the commercials feel longer than usual), but it's an insightful and well-made piece, worth checking out as an examination of the way in which weak minds are manipulated during electoral processes."

New-to-Me Films of 2013 (197 movies items)

"No is a rather distinguishing film about an event in history I knew nothing about. It is presented in a rather realist fashion through a gritty lens, which is distracting at first, but soon proves to add to its retro feel. My one complaint is that this film seemed to cater too specifically to those familiar with Chilean history; because I was unfamiliar with the material, I found the dialogues to be a bit dense and almost incomprehensible. However, the events in the narrative itself were often i"

Sundance Film Festival 2013 (106 movies items)

"Spanish with English subtitles, Chile/U.S.A., Spotlight Pablo Larrain is at the forefront of a growing wave of thrilling Chilean directors. His latest film, No, wowed festivalgoers at Cannes, Toronto, and New York and establishes him as a true force in international cinema. No attests that the arc of the universe can bend toward justice. The multitalented Gael García Bernal portrays René Saavedra, a brilliant young ad man who, against all odds, engineers a successful 1988 voter campaign to o"
