"The writers have created cardboard cutouts instead of flesh-and-blood characters.
- Variety Staff, Variety
This film's real trouble lies in its joyless, pointless execution.
- Janet Maslin, New York Times
Although the material does indeed involve young protagonists, no effort is made to show their lives in a way today's kids can identify with. This movie must seem as odd to them as a foreign film.
- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
It looks like its own rehearsal -- an early one at that.

"I first watched this movie at junior high during chorus class. And looking back at it, it's one of my guilty pleasures. It could have been much better, but it's still enjoyable."

"
I remember seeing this one as a kid and I remember it being pretty bad. I guess Christian Bale never thought to become big like 15 years after this movie was released. I remember the musical numbers in this movie was pretty bad, everything else in this movie was very corny."
