With my Winnipeg, Guy Maddin offers audiences an intensely personal, poetic, and passionate film. The mood of this work wavers from bitterness, nolstagia, regret, blissfulness, and estrangement, but in the end evokes more feelings of LOVE--the real kind, at times murky and complex, at others luminous and simple--than the last 10 films I've watched combined. For in the end, that's what My Winnipeg ... read more

CRITERION FILMS (781 movies items)

"The geographical dead center of North America and the beloved birthplace of Guy Maddin, Winnipeg is the frosty and mysterious star of Maddin’s “docu-fantasia.” A work of memory and imagination, the film burrows into what the director calls “the heart of the heart” of the continent, conjuring a city as delightful as it is fearsome, populated by sleepwalkers and hockey aficionados. Take part in Winnipeg’s epic annual scavenger hunt! Pay your respects to the racehorses forever frozen in"

New-to-Me Films of 2012 (366 movies items)

"I didn't find its concept and execution incredibly compelling, but My Winnipeg is still a pretty good personal portrait of Guy Maddin's hometown. The narration is what definitely makes this film, remaining tense - at times, even poetic - throughout the film. It becomes obvious that this was made for an educational audience, but it still completely worth the watch. "

" Trailer for My Winnipeg Not really a documentary at all, but much of it kinda, sorta has the feel of one, so it sometimes gets labeled as such. I'm including it here because more people ought to have their attention guided to this remarkable film. "

Little known gems (13 movies items)

"A love-note to the history of film and to the true, fabled, and imagined history of director Guy Maddin's beloved/resented home town. Lyrical, dream-like, bitter, nostalgic, remorseful, proud, and enchanting. This is an amazing film."

For in the end, that's what My Winnipeg is- a true labor of love from a serious artist. Viewers will recognize hints of German expressionism, French surrealism, Citizen Kane-esque shots, an entire history of film technique that Maddin employs as he tries to unravel the fibers of his soul, the heart-strings that bind him to his beloved town in a knotty, tangled mess. This is a film that investigates cause and effect, nature and nurture, ” read more
