A classic

Another case where I was expecting a masterpiece but I wasn't really blown away eventually. Still, it is a mesmerizing picture with an awesome perfomance by Dirk Bogarde and obviously, Visconti knows how to direct a movie. Definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Italian movies.

"The beautifully shot, quiet and lonely death scene of aging, avant-garde German composer Gustav von Aschenbach (Dirk Bogarde) slumped on a deck chair on a Venice beach (accompanied by music from a Gustav Mahler symphony) dying of heart failure with dark hair dye dripping down his sweaty, chalk-white face, while lovingly watching an angelic-looking teenaged boy Tadzio (Bjorn Andresen) on the beach who points out toward the horizon of the ocean - Gustav's expression mixed contentment, pain, and ac"

""- You cannot reach the spirit...you cannot reach the spirit through the senses. You cannot. It’s only by complete domination of the senses that you can ever achieve wisdom, truth and human dignity. - Wisdom? Human dignity? - Yes. - What use are they? Genius is a divine gift. No, no: a divine affliction. A sinful, morbid flash fire of natural gifts. - I reject! I reject! I reject the demonic virtues of art! - And you are wrong! Evil is a necessity. It is the food of genius.""
