This is a surprisingly good movie. Very much a film for anyone with a (visually) creative mind as this movie is visually appealing and artistic.

The storyline could probably have been worked on a little as it seemed the usual good vs evil plot. But as I've said, visually, this movie is a blast. The characters and critters involved are strange but appealing. Definitely one to watch,... read more

Strange is the first word that comes to mind after watching MirrorMask but an enjoyable strange.
The film stars Helena, a girl whose parents are circus owners and performers and when her mother falls ill and she blames herself because they had fought earlier. Helena falls asleep and when she wakes up she finds herself in a strange world that is slowly being consumed by shadow. Helena fin... read more

What a weird movie... It has been a while since I saw such a bizarre flick. Visually, it was pretty amazing and it reminded me of the work of Terry Gilliam, Guillermo del Toro and 'The Fall' by Tarsem Singh. Basically, you have some wall-to-wall CGI with impressive sets, strange costums and excentric characters. Still, even though visually, it is absolutely one of the most fascinating movies I ha... read more

Movie Reviews (701-750) (51 movies items)

" The Ups: Some of it's animation is unique and unlike anything else shown on film. The Downs: The direction is flat, the world is pretty bleak and lacks detail. The leading actress lacks charisma and is a bore. "

Ugliness and demeasure in cinema (119 movies items)

" Imaginary is a fertile ground for demeasure. Taking the point of view of the imaginative child, we believe images that are clearly impossible to believe. The magic of cinema is to make us believe in things."

A good movie

Visually, it was pretty amazing and it reminded me of the work of Terry Gilliam, Guillermo del Toro and 'The Fall' by Tarsem Singh. Basically, you have some wall-to-wall CGI with impressive sets, strange costums and excentric characters. Still, even though visually, it is absolutely one of the most fascinating movies I have seen lately, the plot was actually nothing mind-blowing, when you think about it. It is like many movies directed by Gilliam. Indeed, I find those visually appealing but also sometimes, rather alienating. I had the same feeling here and, honestly, I thought the story was OK but that's it. So, I did like it but it is a matter of taste as Roger Ebert admired its artistry but thought that the plot” read more
