Visually Beautiful, If A Little Banal

“Having been such a big fan of the works of both Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean since my teenage years with The Sandman and the likes this was certainly something that caught my attention upon its release. 'Mirrormask' is very much in the tradition of surreal fairly tales like ‘Alice In Wonderland’ and 'Spirited Away', unfortunately it lacks the true genius of both. Not that it isn't an interesting film, just that while the design and overall aesthetic of the piece is certainly original and at times utterly beautiful, the actual story and nigh on every other factor is really rather slight. “What a weird movie... It has been a while since I saw such a bizarre flick. Visually, it was pretty amazing and it reminded me of the work of Terry Gilliam, Guillermo del Toro and 'The Fall' by Tarsem Singh. Basically, you have some wall-to-wall CGI with impressive sets, strange costums and excentric characters. Still, even though visually, it is absolutely one of the most fascinating movies I have seen lately, the plot was actually nothing mind-blowing, when you think about it. It is like many movies directed by Gilliam. Indeed, I find those visually appealing but also sometimes, rather alienating. I had the same feeling here and, honestly, I thought the story was OK but that's it.
