"This anime movie is split into 3 short stories with the best being the first story Magnetic Rose set onboard a derelict ghost spaceship. Whilst the 2nd story Stink Bomb about a man whose odor threatens the whole of Japan is funny, the last story Cannon Fodder concerns a country fighting a war against an unknown enemy where the daily lives of the citizens revolves around firing cannons. Each story is different and interesting. A very good movie which should be essential viewing for any anime fan."

This anime consists of three different sequels by three different director's, none of them having anything to with each other. The first one is actually something with a promise, with the mysterious space-setting and haunting-feeling, and something that might have worked nicely as a film of it's own. The second however is just way too of a humorous attempt so that coming right after the first one, it just doesn't work - nor is it particularly good or amusing even. And the last one is j"

"Based on three manga short stories by Katsuhiro Otomo and co-written by future Japanese animation great Satoshi Kon, 'Memories' is another superb Japanese anthology film to place beside 'Robot Carnival' in the underrated classics file. If 'Memories' has a major flaw its that it makes the mistake of opening with its strongest segment, the breathtaking 'Magnetic Rose', in which two engineers on a salvage mission in space encounter the ghostly apparition of a dead opera singer. Visually stunning "

Akira-ohjaaja Katsuhiru Otomo kokoaa yhdeksi elokuvaksi kolme animetarinaa.
"Memories is an anime anthology, one that explores 3 stories done by 3 geniuses of Japanese animation, with nothing in common among them, but that will give you 90 min or so of your life to remember."

A trio of animated shorts that I like basically for the same reasons that I stated for Heavy Metal & The Animatrix.
I really enjoy the format of an anthology, because, as it is demonstrated here in Memories, it allows for a wider choice ideas of stories that probably wouldn't be big enough to fill up an entire movie.
It also allows for a bit more risk in the creativity of the plot, without having to commit all the time of work that it would take to make a full length feature that is dependent "
