In many ways, Witchfinder General may be Vincent Price's greatest role. Out of all of the wonderful and magic performances that Price blessed us with over the years, this one is his most far removed. Gone is the sense of charm and glee that Price usually displayed, replaced with a completely viscous,and unsympathetic performance. The Ups: Vincent Price makes one of his most believable and darker character portraits playing the real witch hunter Matthew Hopkins. The movie is pretty brutal with sex and torture mixed together. It feels authentic and believable. The ending is pretty grim.
The Downs: A lot of lesser budget movies started making inferior copies. I don't think many if any succeeded like this one. That Michael Reeves would die shortly after this movie after only making three movies makes me sad."
