Sublime film of warmth, humour and power

"You are my best friend. You are my only friend."

In this cinematic era of computer animation, the art of claymation (for which hand-moulded figurines are painstakingly photographed one frame at a time) is slowly dissolving. Aardman Studios (the guys behind Wallace and Gromit) seem to be the only ones who still possess the patience required to continue the practise into the 21st Cen... read more

After reading many fantastic reviews of this film and the fact that Mary And Max still wasn't released in Britain despite it has been released for a year, I just couldn't resist watching it. What I got out of this was 90 minutes of raw emotion, dark comedy and mind-blowing animation. It is an extremely underrated film that should have been nominated for Best Animated Picture to be tough competitio... read more

Description: Academy Award-winning Harvie Krumpet director Adam Elliot returns to the world of clay animation with this simple tale of the innocent correspondence between a portly eight year old girl from the suburbs of Melbourne and a morbidly obese, middle-aged Jewish New Yorker suffering from Asperger's Syndrome. On the surface it would seem that Mary (Toni Collette) and Max (Philip Seymour Hoffman) would have little in common, but over the course of twenty years, the unlikely pen pals exchange letters discussing everything from taxidermy, trust, pets, religion, obesity, autism, agoraphobia, alcoholism, and just about any other topic that ... A good movie

“Since I kept hearing some really impressive things about this movie (for example, it has been on the IMDb top 250 for a while already), I was really eager to check this flick and I had some rather high expectations. Well, to be be honest, even though I found many things to admire, I can't say it really blew me away though. I mean, it is definitely a gorgeous  stop motion animated feature, probably one of the very best I have ever seen, at least in this area. The main issue I had is that even though the story and the characters involved were decent, they never became really more than that, at least, for me. I mean, at some points, I thought that it was finally going towards the right direction but, eventually, it never happened, that magical moment when you are swept away by a great tale. ” read more

"Max Horowitz Why? Because he represents the depressing, but somewhat uplifting side of me when living in New York: though I'm not obese like Max, I am on the autism spectrum and am proud of saying that it's who I am, try to talk myself out of killing myself from living in a city where you're surrounded by so many people, yet so alone at the same time, except for that one special friend to keep you moving along."

My Movie Journal - 2013 *Spanish* (closed list) (57 movies items)

Mary and Max

“For all of the praise that Up garnered around this same time for maturely handling grief, regret, and death, I never quite warmed up to it. I appreciated it at an arm’s length, but Mary and Max handles similar material with more aplomb. Mary and Max is quite possibly one of the bleakest and despairing animated films, a meditation of two sad, damaged individuals struggling deeply to form a connection. This connection, surprisingly intimate and warm despite being over letters, also gives the film a counterbalance of hope, joy, and humanity.

2009 was a banner year for animation, not only did we see the release of these two films, but even lesser efforts like 9, commendable ones like The Princess and the Frog, and neo-classics like Coraline, Ponyo, and Fantastic Mr. Fox all saw rel” read more

Movies the giraffe watched in 2015: July (27 movies items)

"Re-watch - July 7th Still one of the best films I've ever seen. I had to catch it one more time before Netflix removed it since I haven't had a chance yet to pick up my own copy. One of these days I intend to remedy that. It's so different and heartfelt and just a masterpiece of animation. If for whatever reason you haven't watched this, please correct that ASAP."

100 Greatest Animated Features (100 movies items)

"Australian stop-motion animator Adam Eliott came to my attention through his masterful Oscar winning 2003 short 'Harvie Krumpet'. A beautiful, bittersweet and wickedly hilarious creation, 'Harvie Krumpet' became one of my favourite animated shorts of all time. When I heard Eliott was making a feature I could barely contain my joy and, when it finally arrived, 'Mary and Max' did not disappoint. Tapping into the same mordant humour as 'Harvie Krumpet', 'Mary and Max' examines the friendship betwee"

Movies I Streamed on Netflix in 2015 (111 movies items)

"Pros: Celebrates "snail mail" in a unique story (told with clay animation) about a pen-pal relationship between two lonely characters living on two different continents; moves quickly; several genuinely touching moments and funny scenes; nice voice-over work by the late Philip Seymour Hoffman (as Max), Toni Collette (as Mary), and Barry Humphries (as the Narrator). Cons: Seems to go overboard with all of the bad things that keep happening to both Mary and Max (it's like writer/director Adam Ell"
