Slickly vacuous

Immature princess gets married off for political reasons, enjoys spoils of artisan aristocracy, but fails to ignite husbands boudoir passions. Eventually gives him an heir, only to then fall victim to the French revolution. A candy-coated, 16th century version of Sex in the City.

Uma Coppola na Corte Francesa

Posted : 10 months ago at Jan 23 8:04

Really beautiful scenes, amazing colors... but that's all. You can sleep half the movie and you won't miss the story, 'cause nothing happens (ok, somethings happen, but they happen reeeeeally slowly). I know it's a historical movie, so there's nothing she can do about the facts, but there's a million ways of telling them and I personally don't like the one she uses.

I don't understand why people think Sofia Coppola is so "great and special". Or not, maybe I do. Her movies are really pretty and the images are really good... sadly I can't say the same thing about the stories.

Incredibly similar to 'The Duchess' with Keira Knightley. Yet without someone who is as good an actor as Joseph Fiennes. Kirsten Dunst is not very convincing as Austrian-French royalty. The film does not have much to say and tries to compensate for it with lavish, colourful scenes of palace life. I kept waiting for something meaningful to happen - but, sadly, it didn't.
Unsatisfying.

Just a glimpse

Posted : 1 year, 3 months ago at Jul 27 11:45
This movie's aim is to give you just a glimpse into the life of Marie Antoinette, in a very slow and personal way. By the same director as Lost in Translation, there are more similarities that you might expect. The true story of an Austrian princess who was never brought up to expect to be Queen and how she ended up going down in history unjustly as the most reviled royal to ever live is much too complicated for a feature length film, and this movie doesn't try to do that. What it does accomplish successfully is humanizes the queen, and even gives you some of the drama of the pressure she was under to produce an heir. The movie has an unusual sound throughout and truly isn't a "screenplay". There is little dialog, and is more like overhearing somebody's life. The visuals are stunning...Read more

It was pretty looking

It certainly was a feast for the eyes and from a visual standpoint a really pretty movie. However from the trailers it seemed like a more teen oriented film. Not your usual period piece fair of great seriousness and the like. Too bad that while it did try to do that it was BO-RING. While there were alot of scenes to appeal to the teenage crowd (most of them I would say were rather out of place) there'd also be alot of scenes of people just walking. Or going from point A to point B. It was real pretty looking but for a person watching it was just plain BORING! Ack! I thought it'd be a more comedic thing especially with a French King with a very strong Texan accent. I could forgive really jarring accents if it just wasn't so boring. They did film at Versailles itself and perhaps wante...Read more

Marie Antoinette

It felt like I was watching a Vivienne Westwood fashion show at times. If the same attention to detail had gone into the script I may have enjoyed this film more.

Visually Stunning

Marie Antoinette was visually stunning as well as entertaining. For people expecting a period accurate movie, this is not the movie for you. This is more of a casual modern interperatation of Marie Antoinette's life based in the 18th century. Most of the dialogue and situations are in one way or another adapted to modern times. Its a very funny film about the coming of age of a teenage princess. The soundtrack works well with this movie, reminds me of "The Breakfast Club", "16 Candles"...etc. Funny and sexy. Keep an eye out for a pair of Chuck Taylors. ;)
