"Have you ever seen blood in the moonlight, Will? It appears quite black."
Michael Mann is a director who went on to get a number of big titles against his name. Heat and Collateral are my personal favourites of director Mann.
However, little do people remember that he directed this classic mystery thriller back in the 1980s. After the success of the movie Silence of... read more
Since I haven't read the book - I've read its sequel and have seen the film adaptation, though - I cannot truly say just how much did Michael Mann and the crew followed the book or improvised of their own. But by what I saw, my feelings on this film is mixed. Very mixed. At times it is clunky, at times boring, at times too offish and, surprisingly, at times energetic, although in a flawed sense. "Probably Michael Mann's finest hour as director and one of the best serial killer genre movie out there. The first movie to feature Hannibal Lecter. Equisite performance from William Petersen as the profiler Will Graham. Love the soundtrack. A must watch for 80's movie fans."
"One of the worst movies ever made. How do people think this is effective? It's so schmaltzy and sloppy and careless. No tension, no terror, and Hannibal does not put his feet up!

Manhunter is an engrossing, enthralling, edge-of-your-seat first installment of the Hannibal Lecter series, but I scoff at those who claim that this is better than the Silence of the Lambs.
Let me elaborate: to the people who say that Brian Cox played Hannibal better than Anthony Hopkins; I gotta say that it's a ridiculous claim. Cox's Hannibal is barely even IN Manhunter, he only appears in a few scenes here and there, while in SOL, Hannibal is the featured antagonist, even more so tha"

"980. The first Hannibal Lecter (or Lecktor, i guess). Folks like to flip their lids about how much better than Red Dragon this one is, so I figured I had to scope it.
You know what? They're both perfectly good movies. I don't think either has the advantage. Both of them do their own things nicely. Manhunter does have an awesome scene where a guy kills a bunch of people while In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida plays...but Red Dragon has a scene where a dude eats a painting.
It's a push!"

"February 19th: Thriller Tuesday!
1st viewing: DVD
As a fan of Silence of the Lambs and the other movies in the series, I wanted to watch this one as well. Manhunter is based on the novel Red Dragon by Thomas Harris.
The movie was actually better than what I thought it would be. The only thing that I didn't like about it was the pacing was at times a bit slow. I still think it was a good movie though."
"A great movie and Brian Cox is far superior as Hannibal Lecter in this than Hopkins in any of the other movies
Anyway several good scenes, the reporter who is captured by The Tooth Fairy and strapped to a wheelechair and set alight, the end shoot-out with In A Garda Vidda playing, or even the blind girls visit to the Tiger ...BUT IMHO there is one scene which just sums up the movie...Its a scene where Lecter is in prison and needs to contact the Tooth Fairy so he asks for the prison phone whic"

Rewatch, *** - ****. Much better than during the last time, but that was no surprise to myself. One hell of an stylish film and one in which freeze frameable material comes on the screen in almost every scene and in every frame. The use of the wide area and especially the neon-lights gives it a very unique feeling, especially for a such a simple plotted serial killer-chasing. Soundtrack is also big on this, because beside the ending credits song (and that scene itself as well), music "

Check out my review:

The pacing of the film was kinda disappointing but surprisingly on the spot in the scenes concerning Hannibal Lektor - The name was misspelled for the film. The above line is small comfort because Lektor's scenes don't amount to more than 10 minutes. Hannibal Lektor - or Lecter - has been bought to public consciousness by Anthony Hopkins in the sequel, Silence of the Lambs, a performance lasting only 16 minutes. A legendary perform"
“Since I haven't read the book - I've read its sequel and have seen the film adaptation, though - I cannot truly say just how much did Michael Mann and the crew followed the book or improvised of their own. But by what I saw, my feelings on this film is mixed. Very mixed. At times it is clunky, at times boring, at times too offish and, surprisingly, at times energetic, although in a flawed sense. This is, in a way, probably the only film I've had difficulty to write a review on. I like the film but I cannot bring myself to appreciate the film beyond a certain level because of its unnaturalistic and lazy approach to the building of the characters and the thrill behind the scenes. I have come to understand these flaws because it was only Mann's third film, meaning he was still new to the art ” read more
