M for Masterpiece...

"What do you know about it? Who are you anyway? Who are you? Criminals? Are you proud of yourselves? Proud of breaking safes or cheating at cards? Things you could just as well keep your fingers off. You wouldn't need to do all that if you'd learn a proper trade or if you'd work. If you weren't a bunch of lazy bastards. But I... I can't help myself! I have no control over this, this evil thing ins... read more

When the police in a German city are unable to catch a child-murderer, other criminals join in the manhunt.

M was released in the early stages of cinema and after another German film Nosferatu, M became almost like the birth of the thriller genre so in terms of horror and suspense, the Germans were the ones that started those specific genres off! I really like silent films especially ones that are suspenseful and have a dark story but this one was a bit of both because there were moments of ordinary dia... read more

A child murderer is at large, so the police, due to public outcry, launch an intense investigation to find the killer. After some time, the ongoing manhunt has only achieved in angering the criminal underworld whose operations are being disrupted by the intense police prescence in their city, so they team up and decide to track down the killer themselves in hopes of finally ending the police crackdown.

"6.11. Yle Areena Uusintakatselu, ei muutoksia. Edelleen liki ylittämätön tekniikan sekä riipivän ja tiiviin tunnelman mestariteos. Siinä samalla tietty suvereeni moraali- ja etiikkatutkielma."

" A masterpiece of cinema that deliver a strong believable story (inspired on true events) blended with unique imagery and gripping editing. Peter Lorre has never been more disgusting, sleazy and pathetic as a child killer."

Elokuvapäiväkirja 2017 (315 movies items)

"26.6. Tekniseltä toteutukseltaan M on paljon aikaansa edellä, ja siksi ymmärrän sen suuren arvostuksen. Muun muassa Argento on varmasti katsellut Langin kameratyöskentelyä. Muutenkin elokuvan teemat ovat aikakauteen nähden vahvoja ja rankkoja. Eräänlaisena vigilantegenrenkin edustajana tämä kävelee muiden edellä. Kaikin puolin vangitseva kokemus on kyseessä."

Movies of Sound Era Without Musical Score (26 movies items)

" The film was one of the first to use a leitmotif, a technique borrowed from opera, associating a tune with Lorre's character, who whistles the tune "In the Hall of the Mountain King" from Edvard Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite No. 1. Later in the film, the mere sound of the song lets the audience know that he is nearby, off-screen. It's the only "music" in the film."

500 Essential Cult Movies (502 movies items)

" M is an incredibly disturbing portrait of a serial killer and child predator; it is also director Fritz Lang's masterpiece. The film delves deep into the darker side of humanity, treating subjects as horrible as child rape and murder delicately but with shadowed honesty that makes the final effect all the more awful and powerful.
