A genuinely terrifying fright flick

"Well, if she's not a ghost then what is she?"Another low-budget fright film from Australian producer James Wan, 2016's Lights Out is one of the superior horror offerings of the year, and that's not simply by default. This feature debut for filmmaker David F. Sandberg is a slick, taut, well-made thriller featuring likeable characters who don't act like complete idiots, and it doesn't insult audien... read more

Notes:
*I watched the short before this and it was okay so I was curious how they would do with a feature length.
*The trailer looked like fun as I have a guilty pleasure for the movies Darkness Falls as well as Vanishing on 7th Street which both deal with this sort of theme.
*Eric Heisserer has actually done a few movies almost all are quite good with the exception of the Nightm... read more

Horror Films Ranked - 2016 (10 movies items)

" Directed by: David F. Sandberg "There's no you without me." I loved Lights Out to begin with. Upon seeing it again there were a lot of things that bothered me. The main thing was how the film explained everything. I found that it drew away from the tension and suspense and made the scares less impactful. Of course the fact that I knew where the film was going did mean something, and I did juggle a bit with if I should leave my rating as it was, due to the film leaving such a strong first impr"

BradWesley123's Movie Journal- December 2016 (33 movies items)

" DVD- 1hr. 21min. First Viewing It's certainly more engaging than I had expected it to be, the scares are solid and the cast is strong, but Lights Out can't quite overcome an undercooked plot. It works in differing stretches, but can't stick the landing (the ending is just not very good). There's certainly enough here to mildly recommend, but a few too many issues to rectify in the presumed sequel. Monthly Wesley AwardBest Visual Effects"

2016 Films - Best to Worst (65 movies items)

" In recent years we have gotten a lot of great and inventive horror films that manages to combine a dreading atmosphere with genuine terror and scares. Lights Out is another addition to that list of great horror films. It manages to transcend its gimmick into something that is extremely frightening. The nature of its gimmick means that there are a lot of jump scares to be found, but none of them feels cheap. They are always the result of proper build-up and an atmosphere that is well-crafted and"

Miika's Movie Diary - 2017 (250 movies items)

"13.6, PC Elokuvan premissi antaa mainiot rahkeet käyttää hyväksi pimeitä nurkkauksia ja käytäviä. Valitettavasti vasta viimeisen puolen tunnin aikana Lights Out ymmärtää käyttää potentiaaliaan. Sitäkin harmittavan rajallisesti, mutta tusinakauhuksi ihan menettelevän lopputuloksen antaen. Aikaisempi siivu kestosta käsittää lähinnä tylsää pohjustusta ja puolivillaista näyttelyä."

"30.05. Netflix, 1st viewing DIRECTED BY David F. Sandberg Yet another generic Netflix horror film that relies almost solely on jump scares. "

"The amount of music stingers and sudden screams that were 1000 times louder than the rest of the sound levels got really annoying and fast. Also the movie set rules for the burned lady thing but then it kept breaking them all the time. All those things kept really bothering me and I really didn't like this film that much. The short film was good and it was nice to see the same swedish lady have a cameo in this."

the sacrifices of mothering in horror movies (5 movies items)

"In Lights Out, the demonic entity, “Diana,” is actually the incarnation of Sophie’s depression, a force that came between her and her children. “Diana” destroys all Sophie’s relationships, making it clear how difficult those relationships were for her as she struggled with mental illness. "
