Sideplots really don't do much good nowadays

I don't think this is one of those movies that will be hauled as classics in the coming years, but it's still a thoroughly entertaining and striking display of northern filmmaking at it's best. Often melancholic and almost completely silent, drowning in snowy suburban landscapes, Let The Right One In has tons of beautiful imagery to showcase along with a score that supports the film as a whole and almost elevates it to a higher level with piano that is so heartbreaking, and violins that manage to sound very un-sappy, yet touching. The problem lies somewhat within the story. It's a condesended view of the book that it is based upon, and even if you haven't read the book, you'll get the feeling that something is missing. For example the person who helps our young vampiress collect blood is i...Read more

Let the Right One In

Quiet and meditative more often than it is full of false scares and frights, Let the Right One In is a gloriously beautiful film about a nerdy preteen in his first blushing of love with a vampire, who may or may not actually be female. With two young actors who forsake American child actors precociousness for grit, honesty and maturity and gorgeous cinematography, Let the Right One In is perfect from the first few seconds to the dementedly sweet ending. Yes, this is a vampire movie, but like all great horror films it’s smart enough to know that the horror elements need to come in second. The storyline comes first. This is a storyline of quiet moments but packed with tiny, barely spoken, hints and symbols. That scar across Eli’s privates hints that maybe she used to be a he. And the ...Read more

Entertaining, unusually affecting genre bender

Oskar: "Are you really twelve?" Eli: "Yes. It's just I've been twelve for a very long time." An assuringly unique and refreshing vampire story from Sweden, Let the Right One In is a motion picture of extraordinary mood and imaginative directorial potency. Instead of a customary genre feature, this Swedish sleeper is in fact a hushed, gentle tale of provisional friendship, the ordeal of adolescence and the curse of vampiric immortality. A spellbinding motion picture from start to finish, Let the Right One In is a marvel; an ingenious horror film able to frighten and disarm in the same instant, and one of the most resonant, haunting cinematic experiences of 2008. And it has already been targeted for a Hollywood remake... During 2008, movie-goers greeted two similar vampire movies, bot...Read more

Love Bleeds.

Good horror movies come so rarely into my life. The same with good vampire movies. And the same also goes for good love stories (I refrain from using the term "romance movies" since I find Hollywood's idea of romance is always so impossibly & ridiculously fairy-tale-like). This movie is 2 outta 3 (Though there is some, it's very light on the horror). Told more in an adult manner, yet still with enough of an escapist sensibilty that is respective to the genre, this is a soft, beautiful & beguiling story (which is really saying something since I don't know what that word means) of two 12 year olds finding love for the first time thru the flaws of each of their separate (& sometimes desperate) life situations. The lead actors for this movie portray their characters with a true down to earth...Read more
