Amazing and masterpiecing film noir-thriller by one of the greatest directors in history,and one of the most underrated Henri-Georges Clouzot.Justly regarded as one of the masters of suspense. He directed the project so that the power to emerging underground. Back then to, the biggest rival to Alfred Hitchcock was the French director, Henri-George Clouzot. There were actually competing to make this movie but, eventually, Clouzot was the one who had the honour to adapt this bestseller and with great success as it became an instant classic. Clouzot directs with a cruelty that combines a nastily tangled storyline worthy of Hitchcock with three strong performances (one of which is the beautiful Simone Signoret) and a seedy setting.
There are scenes of physical horror, but Clouzot also sets the flesh creeping with incidences of ordinary nastiness.

" The Ups: Still the most effective "we lost the body" thriller that is made. The ending still kicks a punch in the gut even if one know how it ends. Normal contact lenses can scare more than a million monsters. Vera Clouzot is so gorgeous vulnerable in this movie. The Downs: The police investigator at the end feels almost like an after-thought to the movie."
