Orson Welles's The Trial is one disturbing, but hauntingly beautiful film. After years of having studio interference with many of his movies from the Magnificent Ambersons onwards, Welles finally had complete control and (admittedly) really went for broke with this film! It's about as opposite from a mainstream studio film as you'll ever find, with a constantly wandering narrative that really goes... read more

Description: Josef K. wakes up in the morning and finds the police in his room. They tell him that he is on trial but nobody tells him what he is accused of. In order to find out about the reason of this accusation and to protest his innocence, he tries to look behind the facade of the judicial system. But since this remains fruitless, there seems ... "03.02. DVD, 1st viewing DIRECTED BY Orson Welles I used to think that nothing could go wrong with a combination of The Trial the novel, Orson Welles as director and Anthony Perkins as Josef K. but The Trial the movie is disappointing. To the film's defense, me being really tired probably affects my opinion about it. Still, I don't think Orson Welles is a very good comedian hence he doesn't quite manage to capture the Kafkaesque absurdity the way I'd hoped (I prefer Terry Gilliam in that regar"

It's about as opposite from a mainstream studio film as you'll ever find, with a constantly wandering narrative that really goes nowhere for long stretches. But this all works in its on wonderfully weird way as Welles captures the feeling that Josef K really is in the middle of a terrible nightmare. Is it all really happening, or is it all in his imagination? The black and white cinematography is quite simply, some of the best ever put to celluloid. Anthony Perkins is outstanding in the lead role. This is definitely his be” read more

"First viewing - May 12th After watching Touch of Evil I decided to watch another of Orson Welles's films & chose this one from my queue. I can't compare it to the book since I haven't read it yet, but I wouldn't doubt if it fairly accurately captured the spirit of the novel because it all clearly came from Kafka's head. Which means it's entertaining & frequently odd with moments that are funny due to their absurdity. I thought it was a rather uneven film though due to the tonal shifts throughou"

Movie Reviews (301-350) (50 movies items)

" The Ups: Bleak and depressing story based upon Franz Kaftka's novel about how society judge and control people without any reason or knowledge of why. Excellent directed by Orson Welles who make it all feel like an experimental lowbudget study. Acted by fantastic actors and actresses. The Downs: The ending feels (like the book) a little underwhelming but only slight. "
