This is a highly ambitious, serious, and explorative film that in single scenes engages its material with a larger sense of wonder and reverence than the entirety of Mel Gibson's exploitive film ever could. In a disclaimer at the very onset of the film, Scorsese warns audiences that his film is not intended to be a retelling of one or any of the four gospels, but rather an artistic exploration of ... read more

I had high expectations for this film because it is a film from Martin Scorsese and it is one of the few Scorsese films that is a non-crime film and has drama within it. This film disappointed me quite a bit. The best things about this film were that it did show how horrifying Jesus' crucifixion really was to endure and to witness. The disappointments for me were that it dragged on a bit and went ... read more

The movie is a patchwork of the parables, the miracles, and the life and crucifixion of Christ. I completely agree with Leonard Maltin's that "this movie is thought-provoking deep felt drama." Indeed! It will make you think! For starters the ability to think was given by God himself, and that includes the ability to raise issues and metaphors. The movie quotes scriptures, literally. From the begin... read more

Movie Reviews (part 6) (50 movies items)

" The Ups: Satisfying alternative version of the history of Christ seen from a more human aspect. It is controversial just to discuss Jesus as a person with his own drive force and not only as a vessel and it is satisfying to see a movie addressing this and make the story more accessible for unbelievers. Willem Dafoe does one of his more satisfying roles. Harvey Keitel is a great misjudged Judas. Great music from Peter Gabriel. The Downs: Too many established stars in supporting roles. David Bo"

" Here's a movie with a last line that serves as a huge emotional release for both the character saying it and the audience watching. The line conveys so much about the values and selflessness of Jesus."
