The best detective drama ever made

Suspenseful and twisted detective drama movie set in 1960s Los Angeles. I am a big fan of detective movies and this is *the* best movie in this genre. A stellar cast (two of whom - Kevin Spacey and Russell Crowe - would win Best Actor Oscars later in the decade), brilliant direction coupled with outstanding set and costume design make this one the best movies ever made. It got swept aside at the O... read more

L.A. Confidential most likely falls into the category of one of the best movies of the past twenty years. The complex story line seemed to burst at the seams with intelligence. I found the complexity of several different sub-plots working together challenged the intellectual part of my brain while the intense action through out the entire movie satisfied the craving of the not-so-intellectual part... read more

What you get with L.A. Confidential is a classic noir with all the modern trappings (though one could argue that by this point, the film itself is a classic as well). Supported by one of the best and most reverential screenplays, the amazing cast delivers a noir film that is both classic and contemporary at the same time. This is a movie that both deconstructs what it means to be a noir film and i... read more

DVDecember 2017 (32 movies items)

"Re-watch - Dec. 29th I still don't think this movie warrants a higher rating. It's definitely good, but I don't find it to be great. The cast does an admirable job all around (though watching Kevin Spacey play a slimeball cop isn't as easy to take in 2017), and the story is worthwhile. I also appreciate the complexity of the Bud White and Ed Exley characters, but a film about police corruption just doesn't endear itself to me. Thus it's a film I respect but don't love."

Movie Reviews (401-450) (50 movies items)

" Excellent cast is the main reason to enjoy this enormously pleasing film noir. It practically introduced Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce to a broader audience and gave Kim Basinger the highlight of her career (before it went in a downward spiral). The story take some good twists and turns and is engaging all the way through. Great atmospheric piece with old costumes, cars and golden age Hollywood style add to fun. The main villain is not the most original one, but doesn't ruin the experience too "
