"4.7. Svankmajerin toinen Poe-filmatisointi itselleni Usherin talon häviötä enemmän puhuttelevasta novellista, jonka kiehtova kuvaus kuolemanpelosta on tavoitettu erittäin tyylikkäästi. Kuolemaantuomitun kamppailua seuraa erittäin jännittyneenä etenkin hahmon näkökulmasta toteutetun kuvauksen ja tämän stressaantuneen hengityksen ansiosta. Novellin lukeminen etukäteen antaa muuten suuresti lisäarvoa katsomiskokemukselle."
