Kiki is a young witch in training and evidently the rite of passage is to journey to another town and become the town witch. The word witch here doesn't carry the negative connotations of ugly old ladies with bent noses who only wish to consume the flesh of children in order to preserve their twisted sense of beauty. Oh no. Nothing of the sort. Witches aren't the most common thing in the town Kiki goes to yet they aren't an alien concept. So in this town Kiki adopts as her own she gets a live-in job at a bakery delivering stuff, hence the title. As with any magical girl type show Kiki has an animal sidekick befitting one of a witch; a rather snarky black cat.
