Mr. Freeze and Mrs. Heat

Here's a movie about a couple on vacation that made me feel like I was with them, learning about places, cultures, and people. The husband and wife clash when together, then obsess about one another when apart. This implies that a deep marriage is an ironic catch 22, often mercilessly taxing, without ever being completely hopeless...just like life itself.

So much talk, and essays, and theory about this films, that one almost misses its human but tolerable sadness, its frivoluos touches, its turistic relax, its sexy humour (Sanders not sleeping with the prostitute and with handicapped Maria Mauban), its happy ending.

Description: Catherine and Alexander, wealthy and sophisticated, drive to Naples to dispose of a deceased uncle's villa. There's a coolness in their relationship and aspects of Naples add to the strain. She remembers a poet who loved her and died in the war; although she didn't love him, the memory underscores romance's absence from her life now. She tours the museums of Naples and Pompeii, immersing herself in the Neapolitan fascination with the dead and noticing how many women are pregnant; he idles on Capri, flirting with women but drawing back from adultery. With her, he's sarcastic; with him, she's critical. They talk of divorce. Will t ... (more)

My Movie Diary 2017 (217 movies items)

" 30 May. Couple George Sanders and Ingrid Bergman are a couple whose marriage is on the rocks, and a trip to countryside Italy isn't quite the therapy they needed, instead made things worse. As much as this Rossellini film is revered, even considered his masterpiece, the story offers little to enhance its characters, and relied too much on the location. "
