The police unearth clues that point to the inspector, but ignore them because of his high standing on the force.
An excellent look into the mind of a murderer, the film features an incredible performance from Gian Maria Volonte in the leading role. Director Elio Petri has made an anti-fascist statement that is both pointed and poignant, full of eerie, unsettling moods abetted by Ennio Morricone's excellent score. A piercing satire of Italian investigative techniques, and an interesting meditation on the relationship between class and guilt.
