This is one of the goriest films I can quickly recall. It's known worldwide for the gore and violence in it. But it also is one of the most hilarious comedies I've seen in quite a while. Ichi works on two levels: A sick, twisted movie with violence and nudity in it brought together by a relatively meaningless plot for some. I know nothing of the backstory to this film. I think there is an anime of it, I'm not sure if the film or the anime came first but... I don't think it makes much difference to my overall impressions.

"May 18 "Older Brother Kakihara, you were in love with Boss Anjo, weren't you? But it wasn't because you were queer or admired him or something. It was because you loved the pain you felt when he beat you up. That's why you're looking for him so hard, isn't it?" This is probably the weirdest Takashi Miike film I have seen so far. It manages to be disturbing and over the top at the same time. Not recommended for anyone with a weak stomach or faint of heart."

"Ichi the Killer" is a film that shocked me and caused me a feeling of strong nausea towards the end, and not for it's noted gore, but for just how deeply it struck me on a visceral level. There's a scene in the film where the titular character, after bringing about a massacre, begins to cry, barely able to walk, falling down repeatedly, saying "I don't want to kill anymore"; while such a thing maysound banal in the context of this review, Miike makes it into one of the most painful moments in cinema.

" A certain amount of dark humor helped out a movie that I thought was otherwise a bit of an overly over-the-top exercise in shock cinema. I had trouble engaging with the film on a consistent level, and its sense of visual style ranged from impressive to "cutesy" and off-putting. I'm left a little bit critical of the hype that surrounds the movie, but not altogether annoyed that I watched it, or anything. Ichi certainly isn't as good as Takashi Miike's Audition or 13 Assassins."
