I Am Legend review

Posted : 1 month, 4 weeks ago on 13 August 2008 09:51 (A review of I Am Legend)

Okay, so I didn't expect to like this one as much as I did, after hearing both the hype and the complaints about it. I never went to see it in the theatres because it wasn't the sort of movie I generally go see. I do think it could have been handled much better, though. And I think the real ending (granted, I've only heard about it) would have been much better than the one we ended up with.

I also think my high rating may have something to do with the fact that I recently (last week) watched the Cruise War of the Worlds, and this is grand cinema by comparison. It makes it harder to see the flaws in this one.

Definitely won't become one of my favorite-ever movies, but not bad for an evening or day of horror films.

plot holes anybody?

Posted : 5 months, 2 weeks ago on 28 April 2008 05:46 (A review of I Am Legend)

As Prelude clearly states in his review, there are tons of plot holes, from start to finish. He's mentioned the most important ones.
My problem with this film is also with the idea - it's such a simple plot: allegedly there is one last man in NYC after a virus wipes out everyone else; he's a doctor and wants to save the world by finding a cure to the virus.
The way the plot was handled could have been better, there were so many opportunities for it to sway, but there were no surprises, just the typical Hollywood trash.

As for the acting, I can't say Will Smith impressed me. Not a noteworthy performance.

I did like the fact that there weren't many actors, and that he does go nuts (clearly visible in the video store scenes) because he lacks a social environment.

Also, I found the Dark Seekers to be terribly badly done!!!! What a crappy CGI.

Hollywood-movie lovers, watch it, it's action-packed. If you're looking for some decent script and good acting, this was pretty lame, so stay away.

Good zombie/vampire movie

Posted : 6 months, 2 weeks ago on 26 March 2008 03:35 (A review of I Am Legend)

Knowing that readers of the original book and viewer of the other films that was based on the book, The Last Man on Earth and Omega Man, I think this version of I Am Legend is worth watching.
The movie starts with a news section that reports that cancer has been cured. The only draw back is found a couple months later that 9% of the people that took the cure turned into vampire/zombies that ended up killing most of the 91% that was left and now only one man is left. And Will Smith's character Robert Neville is that man.
Thinking he is the last man not infected by the virus, Neville and his only companion a dog Sam, goes day and night in New York trying to survive and also tries to find a cure to the virus. The movie some times switches between flashbacks to when the outbreak started with his family trying to get out of New York which slowly is revealed what happens to them.
Acting of part of Will Smith was pretty good compared to the rest of his films and is on par to his role in iRobot.
The only draw back to this movie is toward the end when someone else is brought in and really brings down the feel of the movie.
Now I don't care what Prelude says, it didn't feel like it was pushing ads in my face and I found I Am Legend a good film and really enjoyable.

It reminded me of...

Posted : 7 months, 1 week ago on 5 March 2008 04:42 (A review of I Am Legend)

...Children of Men, but without the really cool nocut scenes. First it is really fun to see a blockbuster without much human interaction dialogue. The scenes of a NYC taken over by nature was pretty cool. The whole humanity is on the verge of exinction and only one thing can save us all and we're so close to getting it, really felt a lot like Children of Men. The only real difference is that Children of Men is better.

Last man!

Posted : 8 months ago on 8 February 2008 01:49 (A review of I Am Legend)

For those of you that are movie buffs and enjoy horror movies, check out Will Smiths new movie "I Am Legend" Its about him being the last man on earth. This movie is based on Richard Mathesons book that came out in 1954. Two movies followed after the release of the book. The Last Man on Earth starring Vincent Price which actually followed the book pretty close but being that it came out in 1964, the effects were not that great. After that The Omega Man starring Charleton Heston came out in 1971, that was pretty good but did not follow the book as much. I have both of these films, and enjoy both very much. As far as Will Smiths new remake I enjoyed it but still like the Omega Man better as well as the book. The only thing I didnt like about Smiths new movie were digital infected humans I tought that was pretty weak. I did enjoy the empty look that they gave New York after the infection had wiped out everyone. Over all I reccomend you watch all three films and read the book and decide for yourself.

I Am Legend review

Posted : 9 months ago on 12 January 2008 03:09 (A review of I Am Legend)

It wasn't what I expected, to say the least. Actually I really didn't know what to expect from this, I really didn't know much about this other than Will Smith was in it and it had something to do with him being the last man on earth? (You can tell I only had a quick look at the advertising poster). But for me this was definitely worth seeing, sure, it could have been a little better, but it was satisfying enough to see.

Okay, so I've never read the book, what this was about and what happens was a mystery to me. This didn't really make me want to read the book, as interesting as this is.. I just don't have any interest in reading it. This flick was full of suspense and scenes where I was on the edge of my seat. It had lots of sudden moments and movements where I jumped a bit at the start, but towards the end I got used to the fact that it's the films basis. When everything is quiet you just have that feeling that any second a zombie is going to jump out and scream in front of the camera. So it is quite obvious when it will happen, but still sudden. For the first part of the movie I could tell what it was going to be like, not that it's a bad thing. Things started to kick up after maybe the first half an hour or so, so I started to enjoy watching it more then. It also had some humour to it, believe it or not. It wasn't a main element to the film but there's a few things you can notice that you could give a small laugh or smile, nothing outrageously funny unless you find Will Smith getting attacked by mutants hilarious.

Will Smith was superb, there was a particular scene that was just extremely emotional and powerful from him. He made it so real and believable, that was the strength it needed so I'm glad he pulled it off. As you could imagine, with him being the 'last man on earth', there aren't really any other actors I can mention. Oh, the zombies were good, two thumbs up to the animation! Ahem.. Oh yes there was Alice Braga, who wasn't very like-able to me. And of course Sam, the dog; great work.

So If this appeals to you, then I really recommend you see this. It's something different to other releases and still manages to get a great audience and be a success.

my god was this lame

Posted : 9 months ago on 10 January 2008 06:21 (A review of I Am Legend)

Nice effects and theme, but that's about all I give it. What a load of garbage! My brain still hurts from all the idiotic plot holes and unimportant garbage they put in. Like the herd of deer running amok thru streets of NY. Even at the start of the film, it was puzzling as hell, as to why there are all of a sudden hundreds of deer in middle of NYC after only 3 bloody years! And if you factor in the fact that there are thousands of killer mutants out there every night, and that the bridges were all blown up 3 years ago, leaving only the Central Park population of deer to multiply to such herd level, well, you'd have to be a retarded 5-year old not to notice that plot hole. So only logical answer is they included the deer hunting scene at the start to get the redneck audience all jacked up, and then throw in their face that Ford Mustang commercial built-in the movie.

and it goes downhill from those first 5 minutes...

The 'Speaking to God' bit was unbelievably lame as well. Ok audience, GOD says there is a place in Vermont, so there. End of dicussion, no need to think about it anymore. GOD says it, so its true, k?

And anyone else notice how convenient that most streets were nicely abandoned with all cars properly parallel parked just so Will Smith can show off his Mustang driving skills?

Of course, they also never answered the fact as to how that woman and child got to NYC in a car and scared off hundreds of mutants with only her car headlights in the process, oh and with all bridges destroyed.

I Am Legend review

Posted : 9 months, 2 weeks ago on 29 December 2007 08:19 (A review of I Am Legend)

The other reviews have made me interested enough in the book to go out and buy it. I really enjoyed this film for various reasons. I liked how interesting Robert Neville's daily routine was, despite how mandane you would expect it to be. Seeing how professionally he has adapted as a human in order to be prepared for just about any scenario was my favourite aspect of the film.

Post-apocalyptic scenarios are fantastic and a personal favourite of mine. I was only slightly disappointed by the ending and the inclusion of other survivors in the film. Neville's character was far more interesting, as was the ability of the vampires to learn new things, which wasn't really expanded on. I'd still definitely recommend it though, Will Smith performed admirably in a lone leading role.

Ah, HELL No!

Posted : 9 months, 2 weeks ago on 29 December 2007 08:00 (A review of I Am Legend)

I'm a fan of post-apocalyptic scenarios. What the world would be like without everyday life.

I heard a lot about the book but I can definitely assume that the film isn't a replica of it. But creativity and poetic license make unique projects.

Will Smith had his moments and I couldn't really imagine anyone else pulling off this role as fluidly.

My favourite aspect of the film was the comradery between Neville and Sam. They needed each other to survive and it only became apparent when they only had each other.
