Since I kept hearing here and there good things about this flick, I thought I should check it out. As a matter of fact, it is only afterwards that I read the movie was dealing with a real Chinese historical figure. I´m rather clueless about Chinese history (like most Westerners, I guess) and I wonder if for the Chinese people those movies are more enjoyable since it deals with their history and c... read more
This film tells the story of Chinese Martial Arts Master Huo Yuanjia (1869-1910). Huo Yuanjia was the founder and spiritual guru of the Jin Wu Sports Federation.
"This is my favorite kung-fu film. I love the fact that this is based on a true story, even though I know it's probably mostly fake. Quite frankly, I don't care. This movie is epic, has great fight sequences, a great story, and some very powerful and emotional scenes. An underrated action film that is one of the best in the genre.

"Why it's Overrated:
I've heard a lot of people call this the best martial arts movie.
What I think:
There was one part of this movie I enjoyed and that was the very first scene. You'd think after Drunken Master came out martial arts movies would learn to be more like it. We don't want to watch you guys talk too much. I think Ip Man took a lot from this movie and Ip Man did it a LOT fucking better."
" "One cannot choose how one's life begins. It takes courage to finish the final step. "
Rating: 8/10
What it's about: Martial arts legend Huo Yuanjia became the most famous fighter in all of China at the turn of the 20th Century. Huo faced personal tragedy but ultimately fought his way out of darkness and into history, defining the true spirit of martial arts. His self-discovery, and the choices he made, inspired his nation.
My thoughts: That had to be one of the best martial arts films"

I can't think of anything i didn't like in this film. The ending made me even tear up a little. It probably didn't film with my Expendables warm up marathon, but i "

I´m rather clueless about Chinese history (like most Westerners, I guess) and I wonder if for the Chinese people those movies are more enjoyable since it deals with their history and culture. Anyway, I thought it was pretty good with some awesome fights scenes. Usually, with martial-arts movies, you have a wise hero who doesn´t want to fight and you have to wait for a while when he breaks his vows and goes to fight because the bad guy forced him somehow. Here, it is the other way around, you start with a fearless figther who seems unbeatable, fights against anyone who dare cha” read more
